WORK LOCATION: Huntsville, AL

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

SALARY RANGE: The anticipated salary range for this role is $73,500 to $111,300 annually. This range reflects a good faith estimate based on the targeted level for the role and typical compensation benchmarks across U.S. locations. Actual compensation may vary depending on the selected candidate's qualifications, experience, geographical location, and internal alignment.

SUMMARY

The Technical Illustrator creates precise, high-clarity line art and technical graphics for operations manuals, maintenance procedures, and controlled documentation supporting Redwire defense programs. This role works collaboratively with engineering, manufacturing, and technical publications teams to ensure all illustrations promote safe, accurate, and consistent task execution.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The following job functions are a basic requirement but are not limited to and may be assigned other duties.
  • Produce detailed, accurate line art for operations manuals, maintenance guides, and supporting procedures.
  • Interpret engineering models, drawings, and schematics to develop 2D/3D technical illustrations.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and publications teams to validate accuracy and clarity.
  • Follow Redwire documentation standards for formatting, terminology, consistency, and compliance.
  • Maintain organized document histories, revision logs, and file structures in PDM/ERP systems.
  • Support digital and print workflows for both legacy and new-development programs.
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts focused on illustration quality and documentation efficiency.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate degree or equivalent experience in Technical Illustration, Technical Communication, Industrial Design, or related discipline.
  • Minimum one year of technical illustration, drafting, or 3D modeling experience.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to interpret engineering prints and schematics.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks Composer, Creo Illustrator, or equivalent technical illustration tools.
  • Familiarity with ERP/PDM systems and controlled documentation workflows.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and work effectively in a fast-paced engineering environment.
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing processes such as assembly, fabrication, and sub-assembly.
  • Ability to show a portfolio of past work.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience supporting defense, aerospace, or government-contracted programs.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign).
  • Familiarity with technical writing principles or MIL-STD documentation structures.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail

  • Ability to quickly learn new tools and systems
  • Consistent delivery within structured, configuration-controlled processes
  • Eligibility to obtain Security Clearance
  • Ability to travel

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The work environment may involve a standard office setting while also incorporating elements of a production area. Employees will use standard office equipment, including computers, and must demonstrate stamina to sit or stand while maintaining attention to detail despite potential interruptions. The role may require occasional activities such as walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and bending. Vision is necessary for reading printed materials and a computer screen, while hearing and speech are essential for effective communication both in person and over the telephone. Additionally, the position may necessitate travel by air or automobile. Employees may be required to use personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coats, to ensure safety in the production environment. Employees may be able to lift up to 30 pounds as needed.
