Job Description

ATANE is seeking an experienced Team Leader for our Bridge Inspection Group based out of the Edison, NJ office. The successful candidate for this position will be primarily responsible for planning, coordinating, and leading highway, and railroad bridge inspections on conventional and complex structures throughout the State of NJ. The successful candidate will lead a team in the field inspection and report development for Routine and Major/ Complex Bridges. The position will require the ability to work comfortably above ground level, including access equipment, ladders, and protected climbing.

Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs, including the oversight of inspection team members, client outreach and coordination, proposal development, completion of bridge load ratings, and assisting in the delivery of bridge design assignments on an as-needed basis.

Responsibilities
  • Review previous bridge inspection reports and information.
  • Schedule and coordinate field operations with subcontractors and subconsultants.
  • Perform and oversee the field inspection of conventional and complex bridge structures as an Inspection Team Leader.
  • Lead team members in field and office tasks.
  • Identify critical findings during field inspection.
  • Document inspection findings including the collection of measurements, development of field sketches, and collection of digital photography.
  • Operate personnel lift equipment, climb ladders, install traffic control devices and other work in support of inspection activities.
  • Prepare inspection proposals including the development of scopes and hour estimates.
  • Prepare engineering reports documenting inspection findings.
  • Review existing load rating and CADD drawings to determine any need for update.
  • Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs.

General Work Conditions

Combination Office and Field Environment: Most work is performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use. Work may infrequently be performed at client's job site, construction trailer, and in the field. Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, within a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment, and doing extensive walking. Adherence to applicable safety protocol is required.

  • Licensed Professional Engineer in New Jersey is preferred with additional licensure in Pennsylvania and/or New York desirable.
  • A minimum 6 years of NBIS bridge inspection and report development experience with NJTA, NJDOT, NJ TRANSIT, DRPA, PANYNJ, and/or PennDOT.
  • Successful completion of the FHWA National Highway Institute's 2-week training course "Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges" and 5-year refresher as needed is a must.
  • Successful completion of the FHWA National Highway Institute's training course "Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges" within the last 5 years is a plus.
  • Successful completion of the FHWA National Highway Institute's training course "Inspection and Maintenance of Ancillary Highway Structures" within the last 5 years is a plus.
  • Successful completion of the FHWA National Highway Institute's training course "Fundamentals of LRFR and Applications of LRFR for Bridge Superstructures" within the last 5 years is a plus.
  • OSHA 10 HR Certification.
  • Certification and experience with confined space inspections preferred.
  • Prior field inspection and report development experience on Major/ Complex Bridges is plus.
  • Experience with FHWA Element Level inventories and inspections.
  • Field inspection and report development of ancillary structures such as sign structures, and high mast lighting standards is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.), and experience with bridge management systems such as NJTA's AssetWise, NJDOT's ComBIS, or PennDOT's BMS.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license with clean motor vehicle report (MVR).
  • Physically capable of performing continuous field work including, working at heights and in confined spaces, carrying ladders and gear, working in adverse weather conditions, etc.
  • Being a Licensed Professional Engineer, the number and type of NHI training certifications held, the highest education degree obtained, and number of years served as full-time Team Leader are critical factors when determining the salary rate.
