Job Description:

TD Innovation Partners (TDIP) is the technology and innovation banking platform within TD Bank, providing specialized banking, financing, and ecosystem solutions to venture-backed and innovation-focused companies across Canada.

The Associate Director, Relationship Management, Early-Stage is responsible for managing and growing a portfolio of founders, newly incorporated companies, accelerator graduates, and venture-backed start-ups at the earliest stages of their growth journey.

As a trusted advisor, the Associate Director develops deep client relationships, delivers deposit, treasury, operational banking and credit solutions, and partners across TD to support clients as they scale. The role requires a strong understanding of the start-up formation ecosystem, the investment dynamics for pre-seed and seed-stage companies, the venture capital landscape, and the banking needs of founders as they progress from formation through commercialization.

The Associate Director also provides strategic oversight to Small Business Banking partners supporting the Early-Stage portfolio, ensuring a consistent client experience, ongoing portfolio monitoring, and the timely identification and graduation of high-potential companies into TD Innovation Partners' Commercial Banking portfolio.

CUSTOMER
  • Manage a portfolio of founders and early-stage companies as they progress from ideation and incorporation through commercialization and venture funding.
  • Develop trusted relationships with founders, CEOs, investors, accelerators, incubators, angel networks, and ecosystem partners.
  • Serve as the primary relationship owner for clients requiring specialized banking solutions during the earliest stages of company development.
  • Identify and deliver tailored banking solutions that address clients' operational, regulatory, funding, and growth objectives. Develop a detailed understanding of customer business models, capital structures, funding strategies, transaction flows, and growth plans. Partner with Capital Solutions teams to identify and structure working capital facilities, operating lines, venture debt, and other financing opportunities, where appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with venture capital firms, angel investors, accelerators, incubators, and other members of the innovation ecosystem.
  • Proactively identify high-potential companies within the Early-Stage portfolio and coordinate transition planning into TDIP Commercial Banking relationships.
  • Partner with Small Business Banking teams to proactively identify founders and companies demonstrating significant growth, funding activity, customer traction, or increasing banking complexity, and facilitate their transition into TDIP Commercial Banking relationships.


SHAREHOLDER
  • Achieve portfolio growth objectives through the acquisition, development, retention, and successful graduation of high-potential early-stage companies into TDIP Commercial Banking relationships.
  • Grow and expand TD's Early-Stage company roster through active engagement with founders, investors, accelerators, and ecosystem partners across Canada.
  • Develop and execute ecosystem-driven business development strategies targeting emerging innovation sectors and founder communities.
  • Grow deposit balances, treasury management revenue, credit utilization, and overall relationship profitability while maintaining a prudent risk profile.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and proactively identify companies exhibiting strong growth, financing activity, customer traction, or strategic significance.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of developments affecting the Canadian innovation ecosystem, venture capital markets, government funding programs, and emerging technology sectors.
  • Contribute to product development, strategic initiatives, and process enhancements that strengthen TDIP's Startup Banking Program.
  • Establish and manage a disciplined portfolio review process to identify emerging companies suitable for migration into TDIP Commercial Banking.
  • Maintain accountability for portfolio graduation metrics, client retention, and the successful transition of relationships between Early-Stage Banking, Small Business Banking, and Commercial Banking teams.


EMPLOYEE / TEAM
  • Serve as an early-stage ecosystem subject matter expert within TDIP, Small Business Banking, and the broader Commercial Bank.
  • Share industry knowledge and best practices related to venture formation, fundraising, founder banking, and start-up growth.
  • Support education initiatives across TD by helping business partners better understand the needs of founders and emerging technology companies.
  • Provide leadership and strategic oversight to Small Business Banking partners supporting Early-Stage clients, ensuring consistent service delivery, effective portfolio management, and early identification of graduation candidates.
  • Develop productive relationships with internal partners across SBB Virtual Account Managers, Product, Credit, Operations, and the Innovation team at TD.
  • Represent TDIP at conferences, industry associations, investor events, accelerator programs, and ecosystem forums.
  • Contribute to TDIP's reputation as a leading banking partner to Canada's innovation ecosystem.
  • Collaborate closely with TDIP Relationship Managers, Capital Solutions partners, and other Commercial Banking stakeholders to support seamless client transitions and maximize relationship growth opportunities.


BREADTH & DEPTH
  • Expert-level professional role requiring substantial relationship management expertise within the venture creation and early-stage company ecosystem.
  • Ability to advise founders and emerging companies on banking, treasury, liquidity, operational, and financing matters.
  • Interprets evolving market, venture capital, and ecosystem developments and translates them into practical banking solutions and strategic advice.
  • Independently manages a portfolio of early-stage relationships with diverse business models and growth trajectories.
  • Exercises sound judgment when evaluating operational, regulatory, reputational, and credit-related matters.
  • Influences decision-making among founders, investors, ecosystem partners, and internal stakeholders.
  • Works independently with minimal supervision and a high degree of accountability.
  • Provides indirect leadership and oversight to Small Business Banking partners supporting Early-Stage client relationships.
  • Responsible for balancing new client acquisition, ecosystem development, portfolio oversight, and graduation management across a national Early-Stage Banking portfolio.
  • Generally reports to the Director, Relationship Management.


EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION
  • Undergraduate degree in Business, Commerce, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
  • 7+ years of experience in commercial banking, venture capital, start-up operations, accelerator programs, or the broader innovation ecosystem.
  • Experience working with founders seeking pre-seed, seed, and Series A investment from Canadian and US investors.
  • Strong business development, networking, and relationship management capabilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Canadian venture capital ecosystem, accelerators, incubators, and government innovation programs.
  • Knowledge of Canadian regulatory environments considered an asset.
  • Professional designations such as CFA, CPA, CBV, MBA, CTP, or equivalent are considered an asset.
