Job Description:
Reporting to the America’s ST&S Tax Senior Manager, this tax advisory role is for a member of the Direct tax team supporting the activities of the Supply, Trading & Shipping (ST&S) business in the United States with support similarly required, as needed, for ST&S activities in Canada and Latin America.
The role necessitates working with a broad network of multidisciplinary experts across bp to understand the business transactions with a view to providing commercially informative tax advice; partnering with the global bp tax team to enable value delivery.
The role holder will help to drive modernization across ST&S tax, transfer pricing, and global tax processes through innovative approaches to standard processes, employing technology solutions as appropriate.
This role will be a key contributor within a distributed team of tax professionals located across the globe (in particular, the US, UK & Singapore.
Key Accountabilities:
- Provide the Trading & Shipping businesses with tax advice and analysis of U.S. federal income tax law. This person will support the trading and execution of physical and paper trades across the various energy and environmental commodities and associated derivatives traded by bp in the America’s both domestically and internationally. This includes crude, refined products, natural gas, power, natural gas liquids and various environmental commodities.
- Meet with business personnel to advise and provide counsel on tax matters. This role requires a candidate who is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where tax analysis and recommendations need to occur promptly (underpinned by sound reasoning and appropriate networking within bp’s Tax Function).
- Coordinate with a team of tax professionals located in the US, Canada and Latin America in providing tax advice and assurance on investments and commercial decisions and work to ensure completed transactions are reported correctly in the local country tax returns.
- The person will support the Tax Operations team; (1) ensure that tax planning, attributes, and positions are accurately reflected in the company’s tax filings, and (2) support the audit team with respect to inquiries from fiscal authorities, and (3) assist with tax advocacy matters.
- Ensure that the Trading & Shipping businesses are aligned with US federal tax laws and that business is conducted in a tax efficient manner.
- The person will advise the Supply Trading & Shipping business on matters of transfer pricing
- Collaborate with key stakeholders on transfer pricing matters including other global members of the Transfer Team and various US businesses and BP’s Finance organization.
- Provide technical input to internal stakeholders to shape strategic direction of transfer pricing initiatives, ensuring safe compliant operations and undertake appropriate audit defense for the transfer pricing positions and strategies implemented by the Transfer Pricing Team.
Essential Education:
- Education/Professional Qualifications: A degree level qualification and with a preference for a Juris Doctorate degree.
Experience and Job Requirements:
Experience: At least 5 to 10 years of relevant tax planning and advisory experience, with a strong preference for oil, gas and commodity trading tax experience
Technical Expertise:
- Understanding of US corporate tax law and experience reviewing, drafting and negotiating corporate governance and transaction documents as it relates to tax matters.
- Understanding of financial modelling and business drivers as they impact and are impacted by US tax requirements.
- Understanding of transfer pricing rules and concepts and experience with cross border transactions between affiliates.
Skills:
- Excellent writing skills for purposes of internal communication, business advice, and drafting of corporate and transactional documents.
- Excellent analytical skills in the areas of US federal domestic taxation.
- Strong understanding of financial and tax accounting.
Desirable Criteria:
- Client advisory skills
- Financial and economic modelling capabilities and understanding
- Skill in the use of Microsoft Office, AI tools and Power BI are preferred.
How much do we pay (Base)? The anticipated base salary for this position is approximately between $165,000 and $225,000 USD annually, *Note that the pay range listed for this position is a genuinely expected and reasonable estimate of the range of possible base compensation at the time of posting.
This position offers paid vacation depending on your years of relevant industry experience and will range from 120 – 240 hours of vacation per year for full times employees (60 - 240 hours of vacation per year for part time employees). You will also be eligible for 9 paid holidays per year and 2 personal choice holidays.
