Project Overview:

Bechtel Energy is currently planning and executing a large number of lump sum self-perform direct hire LNG projects throughout the US Gulf Coast. In addition to LNG tanks, other Field Erected Tanks (FET) are included in projects' scope. This has also created a demand for Tanks General Superintendent support across the Energy Business Line.

Tank discipline construction scope for these projects includes full containment LNG tanks plus multiple FET for the LNG trains and utility areas.

Job Summary:

The Tanks GeneralSuperintendent is responsible for supervising and directing operations within the tanks discipline. Supervises and directs LNG and other FET tanks craft, supervisors, and others, as assigned. Ensures assigned construction performance is following specifications and within schedules and budgets. #LI-TH1

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide ES&H leadership to personnel assigned to the tank and storage department. This includes preparation and implementation of safety procedures and leading Bechtel and subcontractor safety meetings and participating in safety investigations.
  • Inspect site for unsafe conditions and practices and take appropriate corrective action to correct breaches.
  • Coordinate safety training and enforce safe work practices at all times in conjunction with the Environmental Safety and Health Supervisor.
  • Champion the cause of ZERO Accident Philosophy. Ensure that Bechtel and local/national safety codes, requirements and standards are being complied with within assigned area of responsibility.
  • Monitor the activities of craft to ensure compliance with specifications and schedules.
  • Responsible for the cost, schedule and optimization of craft labor and maintaining the overall construction schedule, the 90 day and four week look ahead schedules for labor and equipment.
  • Interface with Labor/Industrial Relations for craft recruitment and training programs.
  • Review craft time records using established automated tools.
  • Review and approve subcontractor equipment/personnel mobilization and demobilization.
  • Responsible for implementing corporate project policies, procedures, and instructions within assigned tank operations.
  • Coordinate with subordinate superintendents and General Foreman to hire tank craft labor to execute work.
  • Responsible for the implementation of project policies, procedures, and instructions within assigned operations.
  • Ensures current design documents are used to complete the work and that all design changes are approved prior to implementation. Monitor work activities to ensure the safety and quality of work performed and compliance with project specifications.
  • Provide input to quantity tracking applications and review weekly installed quantities to Project Controls.
  • Prepare material requisitions for tools and consumables and coordinate through Procurement to obtain these materials.
  • Assist in performing construction testing as required.
  • Prepare reports and forecasts, including summary of construction progress, craft personnel forecasts, and expenditures forecasts.
  • Plan the manpower and equipment required to execute the job.
  • Perform employee reviews and identify training and development opportunities for subordinate tanks personnel.
  • Perform other duties as required by Bechtel management.
  • Coordinate activities with other discipline superintendents or area superintendents and client resident representatives, as necessary to meet project objectives.


Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires bachelor's or master's degree (or international equivalent) and 13-15 years of relevant experience or 17-19 years of relevant work experience


Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • 15 years of demonstrated experience in LNG full containment tank building with strong supervision experience, excellent problem solving skills and ability to lead and manage change.
  • Knowledge and experience of construction methods of full containment LNG tank construction which includes knowledge of carbon steel, aluminum, and 9% Ni plate erection and welding, roof construction, air raise and hydrotesting. Furthermore, knowledge of concrete construction for outside containment and management of interfaces between the concrete and steel teams.
  • Working in a construction field environment, understanding specifications, vendor procedures, instructions & codes with working knowledge of API-650, API-620, API-625, ASME Section VIII, AWWA, and FERC requirements.
  • Knowledge of welding processes such as SMAW, FCAW, SAW and the use of Automatic Girth Welders, Down Flat Tractors, and automated isolation machines.
  • Experience with large crawler cranes, tower cranes, SPMTs and heavy lift programs.
  • Technical knowledge of tank building equipment and tools.
  • Knowledge of requirements for cryogenic insulation including foam block, deck blanket, and perlite.
  • Knowledge of requirements for Lock Out Tag Out.
  • Preferred: Experience on LNG Tanks with concrete outer tank vapor and spill containment.
  • Preferred: Experience on an LNG construction site especially along the U.S. Gulf Coast.
  • Heavy industrial direct hire construction experience commensurate with the type of work to be undertaken.
  • Experience managing technical services subcontracts.
  • Experience in oil, gas, refinery, petrochemical, minerals processing or power generating station construction.
  • Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Ability to work with multi-national employees and across different languages.
  • Ability to train less experienced team members and provide mentorship to others.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving ability.


Additional Information

Work includes field inspections and the physical ability to conduct field inspections which require the following activities: extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, working on elevated platforms, working on uneven surfaces and working in small or confined spaces. Some lifting may be required. Must have the ability to walk into and out of the project (enter/egress). Must be able to use appropriate standard issued Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) required for each assigned task (i.e. harness, life vest, lift buckets, etc.).

Must be willing to work a flexible schedule as required that may include but not limited to nightshift or split shift.
