Job Description

SAIC is seeking a Systems Safety Engineer at our office in Middletown, RI.

A successful candidate will work as part of a team analyzing a system to identify hazards, categorize risk, and recommend mitigations to reduce the risk of mishap occurrence. Candidates will collaborate with internal team, government personnel, and subcontractors.

Job Duties:
  • Utilizing quantitative and qualitative risk assessment techniques to perform safety analysis in accordance with MIL-STD-882E and other guidance.
  • Analysis of hardware, software, firmware, and system interfaces to identify hazards to personnel, equipment, and the environment, to include supplemental analysis techniques such as fault tree analyses, failure modes and hazardous effects analyses, and sneak circuit analyses.
  • Review System Requirements documentation to identify potential hazardous conditions and make recommendations to system design in collaboration with program staff.
  • Performing operational analyses and studies to identify potential deficiencies in operating procedures, handling procedures, stowage or other logistics phases.
  • Reviewing and analyzing system safety management and program plans, safety analyses, accident and incident data, mishap investigation reports, safety test plans and results, and other ESOH related data.
  • Preparing or updating risk assessment reports, safety assessment reports, and presentation materials for formal submission.
  • Conducting or reviewing safety assessment of new, updated, and/or modified hardware and software, waivers, and exemption requests.


Qualifications

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science (or higher) degree in engineering or a technical-related field and/or zero (0) or more years experience.
  • Candidate must be a US Citizen and have the ability to obtain SECRET level clearance. SAIC will sponsor qualified candidates for a security clearance.
  • Familiarity in the use and application of technical standards and system safety principles, theories, concepts and techniques.
  • Familiarity conducting and/or reviewing safety assessment of hardware, software, waivers, and exception requests.
  • Familiarity reviewing System Requirements documentation to identify potential hazardous conditions to make recommendations as needed.

Preferred Experience
  • Basic understanding of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), particularly using Cameo Systems Modeler, or a willingness to learn; formal training and mentorship will be provided for the right candidate
  • Basic understanding of or exposure to Systems Engineering principles and practices, or a demonstrated willingness to develop that knowledge in a hands-on professional environment
  • Basic familiarity with MIL-STD-882E and the Joint Software System Safety Engineering Handbook (JSSSEH), or an eagerness to learn and apply these standards under the guidance of experienced safety professionals
  • Experience supporting Navy, Army, or Air Force acquisition programs
  • Prior internship, co-op, or research experience in a systems engineering or safety-related discipline is a plus
