Standard Job DescriptionOrion Safety and Reliability Engineering ManagerWe are seeking a first-line manager to lead Safety and Reliability engineering for the Orion program. This leader will be accountable for program execution, staffing, and proposal commitments across a team of approximately 15 to 20 engineers. The team operates through a combination of direct and matrixed reporting relationships.
Safety and Reliability have established technical leaders. The successful candidate will bring strong people and organizational leadership, rather than needing to be the subject-matter expert in every discipline. This role reports to the System Analysis and Specialty Engineering Senior Manager and works closely with technical leaders, functional organizations, and other Orion teams to deliver on program commitments.
Responsibilities- Own Orion Safety and Reliability execution, including work priorities, deliverables, staffing, risks, and proposal commitments.
- Lead the day-to-day work of approximately 15 to 20 engineers across direct and matrixed relationships. Set clear expectations, resolve obstacles, and hold the team accountable for commitments.
- Partner with established technical leaders on work planning, execution, and resolution of technical and program issues.
- Provide regular status to the System Analysis and Specialty Engineering Senior Manager and program leadership. Elevate staffing, schedule, technical, and execution issues promptly, with recommended paths to resolution.
- Develop staffing and resource plans. Work with functional and matrix organizations to secure the skills and capacity needed by the program.
- Lead Safety and Reliability proposal efforts, including staffing plans, cost estimates, and assigned proposal deliverables.
- Manage direct reports through hiring, coaching, career development, performance assessments, compensation recommendations, and recognition or corrective actions. Provide performance and development input to the managers of matrixed team members.
- Build effective working relationships with Specialty Engineering, other Orion organizations, suppliers, and customers where their work interfaces with Safety and Reliability.
- Establish goals and measures for execution, staffing, and team health.
Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems. Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal. Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications. For positions that perform IT responsibilities, use E646, Systems Engr-IT.
Basic Qualifications- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in a related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 8+ years of related professional experience.
- 2+ years of experience leading a technical team.
- Experience leading engineering work through cross-functional or matrixed teams.
- Experience with resource planning and core people-management activities, including hiring, employee development, and performance management.
- Working understanding of systems engineering principles and practices.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate status and risks clearly, address performance and execution challenges, and lead through competing priorities
- Must be a US citizen to perform the job
Desired Skills- Experience managing engineering teams in aerospace, human spaceflight, or another safety-critical environment.
- Experience in System Safety, Reliability, or a related engineering discipline.
- Experience leading a sizable team with both direct and matrixed reporting relationships.
- 5+ years of engineering management or integrated product team leadership experience.
- Experience with proposal estimates, integrated schedules, EVMS, or CAM responsibilities.
- Familiarity with how Safety and Reliability work interfaces with Specialty Engineering disciplines.
- Proficient in AI prompting as it applies to this position and practice
Pay InformationFull-Time Salary Range: $145100.00 - $269500.00

PTO, Vacation, sick leave, and holiday hours are prorated based on start date during the calendar year.
