Job Summary and Purpose

  • The Systems Engineer serves as a member of the engineering team responsible for the design, implementation, and support of information technology, networks, systems and services for Stafford County Public Schools. This position maintains secure, efficient and scalable technology systems that support instruction, administration, and district operations.


Work Objectives/Essential Functions

  • Design, build, and maintain the division core IT systems and infrastructure as a member of the Engineering and Operations team.
  • Manage the full life cycle of technology systems, including network infrastructure, servers, hosted services, and endpoint devices.
  • Troubleshoot technology issues in a multi-tier support environment, including support of school based and centralized computer and network technicians.
  • Communicate and follow-up with affected staff, support vendors, and coordinate resources to accomplish customer service goals.
  • Provide high-level technical support as needed.
  • Audit security practices and perform computer forensics as needed.
  • Research technical requirements of proposed technologies for suitability with existing systems and services.
  • Interface with staff and vendors to ensure successful completion of technology projects.
  • Create and maintain documentation for the implementation, administration, and support of division technology.
  • Provide training for division technology support staff when required.
  • Maintain awareness and keep division technology leadership informed of changes and improvements available in relevant technologies.


Education and Experience
Education Attainment (Required): Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field is preferred. Education Attainment (Preferred): Relevant Experience (Required): Minimum of five (5) years of experience in system engineering, networking or IT support. Or a combination of engineer-level industry certifications and comparable job experience. Relevant Experience (Preferred): Demonstrated experience designing and managing large environments in one or more of the following areas: Endpoint protection, Advanced routing and switching, Wireless LAN design, Server Operating systems (Windows Server, Linux), Server Virtualization, Device management systems (SCCM, Intune, Jamf), Firewalls and web filters, Student Information Systems and Learning Management Systems. Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Expertise in one or more of the following:
    • Enterprise-level systems architecture, virtualization, or data center management.
    • Networking technologies, including firewall management, routing, switching, and wireless systems.
    • Cybersecurity practices including imagining, deployment, configuration and lifecycle maintenance.
    • Instructional technology systems in a K-12 education environment.
  • Strong familiarity with instructional technology and commonly used software packages and systems in a K-12 education environment is preferred.
  • Experience in the administration and implementation of cloud-hosted and on-perm systems and applications.
  • Demonstrable capability in the design, configuration, and tuning of physical and virtualized servers, storage and networks.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex IT systems across all OSI model layers.
  • Able to create and maintain technical documentation.
  • Effective communication skills with individuals across all levels of technical proficiency.
  • Can work cooperatively in a team environment to meet goals.
  • Can organize and perform work independently.
  • Will meet deadlines for all work even when working on multiple projects.
