Systems Engineer

Location: Pittsburgh, PA (Hybrid)

Classification: Exempt

Status: Full-Time

Reports to: Manager, Infrastructure & Cloud

Purpose

The Systems Engineer designs, implements, and maintains PANTHERx's core IT infrastructure across on-premises VMware environments and Microsoft Azure cloud services. This role owns the performance, reliability, and security of the virtualization and server platform, including Windows Server, Active Directory and Entra ID, and the supporting backup and disaster recovery capabilities. The Systems Engineer partners closely with network engineering, application teams, and security on system integration, design decisions, and incident response, and provides technical guidance to junior team members. This is a hands-on engineering role within the IT Infrastructure organization and includes participation in an on-call rotation for critical systems.

Responsibilities

Virtualization, Server & Identity

  • Architects, plans, and implements virtual infrastructure using VMware technologies, including vSphere, vCenter, and ESXi.
  • Performs capacity planning, resource optimization, and troubleshooting for VMware environments across the production fleet.
  • Manages virtual machines, virtual networking, and storage systems including SAN/NAS integration.
  • Installs, configures, and maintains Windows Server operating systems across the production infrastructure.
  • Implements and manages Active Directory and Entra ID (formerly Azure AD), including user and group management, domain controllers, group policy, and hybrid identity synchronization.
  • Applies system patching, upgrades, and security hardening across the Windows server fleet.


Azure, Backup & Disaster Recovery

  • Deploys and manages Azure infrastructure, including Azure VMs, virtual networking, storage, and supporting platform services.
  • Implements and operates Azure Backup, Azure Site Recovery, and Azure Monitor across hybrid workloads.
  • Owns backup and restore operations for critical systems and data, ensuring data integrity and disaster recovery readiness across on-premises and Azure environments.
  • Implements and tests high-availability and disaster recovery solutions across on-premises and Azure environments; leads scheduled DR testing cycles.
  • Partners on hybrid connectivity and identity decisions, including Entra Connect, conditional access integration, and site-to-site VPN or ExpressRoute considerations.


Collaboration, Documentation & On-Call

  • Works closely with network engineering, application teams, and security to integrate systems and resolve interdependent issues across on-premises and cloud environments.
  • Creates and maintains comprehensive system documentation, including design specifications, configuration guides, runbooks, and operational procedures.
  • Provides technical guidance to junior team members; shares technical knowledge and best practices with the team, conducting training and mentorship as needed.
  • Participates in the IT infrastructure on-call rotation, including after-hours and weekend coverage on a scheduled basis.


Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in systems engineering, infrastructure engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Strong knowledge of virtualization technologies, particularly VMware vSphere, vCenter, and ESXi.
  • Extensive experience with Windows Server administration, including Active Directory, Group Policy, and PowerShell scripting.
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure, including Azure VMs, virtual networking, storage, and Azure Monitor.
  • Experience with Entra ID (formerly Azure AD), including hybrid identity synchronization and conditional access.
  • Familiarity with storage technologies (SAN/NAS), networking concepts, and security principles.
  • Experience in system monitoring, performance tuning, and capacity planning across virtualized and cloud environments.
  • Knowledge of backup and recovery strategies, high availability, and disaster recovery solutions, including Azure Backup and Azure Site Recovery.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues across on-premises and cloud environments.
  • Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation for critical infrastructure support.


Preferred Qualifications

  • VMware certifications (VCP-DCV or equivalent).
  • Microsoft and Azure certifications (AZ-104 Azure Administrator, AZ-305 Azure Solutions Architect Expert, AZ-800/801 Windows Server Hybrid Administrator, or equivalent).
  • Experience in healthcare or other highly regulated industries (HIPAA, SOC 2, or equivalent compliance frameworks).
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tooling (Terraform, Bicep, or ARM templates).
  • Experience with automation and orchestration platforms across Windows and cloud environments.
  • Linux server administration experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.


Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
