Position Overview

The Systems Administrator is a senior technical role responsible for supporting the design, implementation, and ongoing operations of FortisBC's enterprise server and application infrastructure. This includes operating systems, authentication platforms, enterprise applications, cloud, and system-level services. The role contributes to system planning, participates in complex technical initiatives, and provides advanced operational support to ensure the reliability, scalability, and security of server-based systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provides senior technical input to systems planning for enterprise servers and identity platforms, including:
    • Contributing to the development and maintenance of the Systems Infrastructure Roadmap.
    • Researching and recommending future servers, identity, and system-level architecture that aligns with business and technology needs, product capabilities, strategic direction, and industry best practices.
    • Performing systems capacity planning and technology evaluations in collaboration with Enterprise Architecture, IS Applications, and business units.
  • Contributes technical expertise to the definition and delivery of systems initiatives and upgrades, including:
    • Using the Systems Infrastructure Roadmap to identify and prioritize systems initiatives to support planning of appropriate projects.
    • Contributing to the definition of functional and technical requirements, scope, sequencing, and technical dependencies.
    • Contributing technical estimates and supporting documentation (e.g., effort/resource requirements, options, impacts, assumptions) to support project planning and funding considerations.
    • Leading the execution of system-related projects, in coordination with external service providers and suppliers, to ensure effective and efficient delivery of business technology initiatives.
    • Developing and executing communication plans related to systems upgrades, transitions, and service impacts.
    • Identifying conflicts between system project requirements and enterprise policies, standards, or architecture and recommending solutions.
    • Participating in technical change management activities, quality control reviews, testing, and production turnover activities.
  • Supports the design, implementation, and ongoing improvement of enterprise servers and application platforms, including:
    • Contributing to the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of server operating systems (e.g., Windows, Linux), authentication platforms, enterprise directory services, certificate services, and related system-level infrastructure in alignment with organizational standards and strategic direction.
    • Administering and maintaining enterprise identity platforms, including Active Directory and related authentication and access control services.
    • Configuring and maintaining server environments to support enterprise applications, databases, and integration services.
    • Analyzing and processing complex systems requests to confirm the specified configuration is appropriate for client needs and will operate within FortisBC's systems environment.
    • Assessing technical impacts, recommending alternatives where appropriate, and specifying technical work in detail for implementation by service delivery partners.
  • Provides advanced technical support for enterprise server environments and business-critical applications, including:
    • Responding to support calls and system-related outages.
    • Troubleshooting advanced server and application issues, including authentication, performance, and integration problems.
    • Performing and leading upgrades, installations, and preventive maintenance tasks for server operating systems and enterprise applications.
    • Managing system-level services such as identity platforms, certificate services, and licensing infrastructure.


  • Documents work in the problem management system, prepare progress reports, administer and maintain server and application inventories.
  • Maintains up-to-date superior knowledge of the company's systems infrastructure, cloud, and supported platforms.
  • Coordinates multiple resources and breaks down work, estimating and managing the activities required to deliver intermediate to large-scale systems projects successfully.
  • Provides senior-level support and collaboration with Technical Systems Analysts and other Admin roles.
  • Collaborates with Network and Infrastructure Administrators to diagnose and resolve cross-domain incidents impacting infrastructure services.
  • Performs additional duties related to the above duties, including driving a vehicle, which do not affect the rating of the job.


Requirements

  • 2-year Diploma in Computer or Electronics Technology, Computer Science, or related field.
  • 8 years' related work experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of server operating systems, enterprise applications, authentication platforms, and system-level services.
  • Advanced expertise with system monitoring and automation tools.
  • Advanced understanding of identity management, certificate services, and licensing infrastructure.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communications and presentation skills.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills, including the ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Ability to execute large projects.
  • Ability to analyze problems.
  • Leadership and management skills.
  • Valid Class 5 British Columbia Driver's license.
