Independently supports existing products and manufacturing operations by leading technical problem solving, qualifying alternate components, and driving process, cost, and quality improvements. This role is expected to manage moderately complex projects with minimal supervision, provide technical leadership to cross-functional teams, and serve as a key technical resource to Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Technical Service. Mentors less experienced engineers and contributes to longer-term product and process strategy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Lead and execute sustaining engineering projects of moderate to high complexity, including cost-reduction, quality improvement, and manufacturability initiatives.
• Serve as a technical authority for assigned product families, resolving recurring manufacturing, field, and supplier issues.
• Improve manufacturing efficiency, production yields, product quality, and consistency through product and process design modifications.
• Provide advanced technical assistance and engineering support to the manufacturing floor to ensure safe, repeatable production of high-quality products.
• Lead qualification of alternate and second-source components while ensuring compliance with agency, customer, and design requirements
• Plan, execute, and document engineering changes, including risk assessments, validation testing, and formal release through document control systems.
• Develop and maintain detailed project schedules; proactively manage risks, priorities, and stakeholder expectations.
• Support product releases into manufacturing through cross-functional coordination.
• Prepare technical documentation, reports, and presentations.
• Contribute to technical papers, training materials, and product knowledge transfer.
• Maintain technical proficiency and stay current with applicable standards and technologies.
• Support intellectual property activities as required.
• Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers.
• Adhere to all departmental and company safety, quality, and procedural policies.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but provides technical leadership and mentoring to less experienced engineers.
Competencies
In addition to the competencies required of a Sustaining Engineer I, the Sustaining Engineer II is expected to demonstrate advanced problem-solving skills, strong technical judgment, the ability to lead cross-functional teams, effective project leadership, and a high level of ownership and accountability.
Requirements
• Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Engineering.
• Typically 3-6 years of relevant sustaining, manufacturing, or product development engineering experience.
• Demonstrated ability to independently execute engineering projects. (Increased expectation)
• Experience mentoring or providing technical guidance preferred.
Technical Experience
• Experience with sheet metal, machining, die casting, injection molding, and related manufacturing methods.
• Advanced understanding of GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
• Experience executing engineering changes through formal document control processes.
• Experience working within multi-disciplinary product development teams.
• ERP/MRP, PLM, and PDM system experience preferred.
• Experience in piping, plumbing, and combustion design a plus.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint) and SolidWorks modeling and drafting.
