Job Overview:

APTIM's Sustainability team is currently seeking San Francisco based zero waste specialist to support our waste minimization team for public and private sector clients. The ideal candidate will have 2+ years demonstrated experience working on solid waste related issues including zero waste, waste minimization, sustainable materials management, organic waste diversion, and recycling.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
  • Execute multiple environmental, waste minimization, compliance, and data analysis projects while meeting established schedules, budgets, and quality standards.
  • Conduct fieldwork, waste audits, material sorts, site evaluations, and environmental assessments to identify compliance requirements, contamination issues, and diversion opportunities.
  • Collect, analyze, interpret, and report environmental and operational data using databases, spreadsheets, mobile data collection tools, and analytical software to support project objectives and reporting needs.
  • Prepare, review, and maintain technical reports, regulatory documentation, proposals, dashboards, and client deliverables in accordance with applicable standards and regulations.
  • Evaluate proposed projects and site conditions to identify environmental impacts, regulatory obligations, and program implementation requirements.
  • Provide technical assistance, guidance, and training to clients through in-person and virtual engagement to support environmental compliance, waste diversion, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, regulatory agencies, haulers, contractors, and other stakeholders, serving as a primary point of communication when needed.
  • Support client compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations, including hazardous waste, non-hazardous waste, recycling, organics diversion, and related regulatory programs.
  • Work independently and within project teams, adapting to changing client and site needs, and supporting additional projects as needed.
  • Adhere to health, safety, quality assurance, and company procedures while adapting to changing project requirements, site conditions, and client needs.
  • Support project administration activities, including document management, data quality control, field data organization, reporting, and continuous process improvement initiatives.


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in sustainability, environmental policy, environmental studies, climate science, comprehensive planning, or related field is preferred
  • Knowledge and experience on solid waste, recycling, zero waste, circular economy, plastics and packaging, and waste minimization strategies, etc. occurring in states across the U.S. and at the national level
  • Fieldwork experience performing waste evaluations and audits
  • The ability to present ideas effectively and deliver presentations suited to the characteristics and needs of the audience
  • 2+ years' experience in several of the following areas:
  • Solid waste management, recycling, zero waste, and circular economy
  • Sustainable materials management
  • Plastics and packaging
  • Effective written/verbal communication, presentation, and public speaking experience
  • Ability to multi-task, maintain flexibility, and travel.

As of the date of this posting, a good faith estimate of the current pay rate for this position is $36.46- $48.08 per hour. Compensation depends on several factors including: experience, education, key skills, geographic location of the position, client requirements, external market competitiveness, and internal equity among other employees within APTIM.
