DESCRIPTIONApplications are available online beginning Tuesday, August 4, 2026, through 11:59 pm, Tuesday, September 1, 2026 EXAMPLES OF DUTIESUnder immediate supervision, performs routine surveying work on a survey crew; provides surveying support using various types of survey equipment; expedites survey progress by selecting suitable positions for intermediate instrument points; sets out and removes traffic warning flags and barrier cones; clears obstacles from line of survey as directed; operates survey instruments; sets/marks grade stakes, hubs, turning points and recovers survey monuments; performs construction staking, design surveys, monitoring surveys, monument perpetuation and other types of surveys; makes survey calculations, sketches, and field notes; downloads, processes, and uploads survey data; uses other survey equipment or CAD/computer programs; cleans and cares for instruments, tools, vehicles and office spaces; Operates City Vehicles incidental to primary assignment; and performs other related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILEApplicants must meet the requirements of

- Ability and willingness to work in and around heavy traffic and construction sites;
- Ability to pass a TSA background check sufficient to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) and/or Secure Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge within the probationary period;
- Ability to perform the physical labor involved in surveying. This includes repetitive or continuous stooping, twisting, kneeling, walking, standing, lifting/carrying 25 lbs, outside in mild to harsh weather conditions.
Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
A valid driver's license must be submitted to the hiring department at the time of the selection interview.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with preliminary, topographic, construction, boundary and control surveys. Familiarity with total stations, data collectors, computers, and computer applications such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, Trimble Business Center, MicroStation/InRoads, or other related software, global positioning system (GPS) receivers, construction staking, design surveys, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and other surveying systems are desired for some positions. Possession of California Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT) or California Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.

A minimum rating of 70 must be attained in order to pass the examination. Certification by score bands will be considered based on analysis of exam results. The resulting eligible list will remain in effect for at least one year. Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted. Only those candidates showing the strongest backgrounds on the basis of comparative analysis will be invited to the examination process. Based on the number of applications accepted, the selection procedure may be changed. In the event a revision is necessary, the affected persons will be notified.
In accordance with Civil Service Procedure 3.38, all eligible veterans who successfully qualify on any or all open-competitive examinations shall receive an additional credit of ten (10) points that will be added to their original passing score. Disabled veterans passing the examination shall receive a credit of fifteen (15) points that will be added to their original passing score. (A copy of the veterans DD-214, Member 4 form indicating honorable discharge must be attached to the application at the time of filing.)
