Description

Summary

At Sambatek, our survey team plays a key role in shaping the communities we serve. As a Survey Crew Chief, you'll lead field efforts across a diverse mix of projects-bringing technical expertise, problem-solving, and collaboration to every site.

This role offers the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects, including public and private developments, commercial and residential sites, municipal work, utilities, and energy. Our team values the diversity of work and the chance to stay engaged in different types of projects throughout the year.

Field crews typically start around 6:00 AM during the summer months, with more flexibility in the winter. Daily schedules may vary based on project needs and locations, but crews generally aim to wrap up by late afternoon. Depending on the project, you may work independently or alongside an Instrument Technician.

This is a production-focused role, with annual utilization goals typically ranging from 90-95%.
  • Work Location: On-site, field-based role
  • Expected Compensation Range: $35-47 per hour (Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications)
  • Pay Rate Type: Hourly with overtime rate of 1.5x base pay for all hours worked over 40 in a week


Responsibilities

  • Lead field survey operations and execute work based on project scope and work orders
  • Partner with Project Managers to understand project goals, schedules, and budgets
  • Perform field surveys including construction staking, boundary surveys, ALTA surveys, and topographic surveys
  • Collaborate with Licensed Land Surveyors to support boundary determinations
  • Interpret engineering plans and apply them in the field-troubleshooting issues and knowing when to elevate questions
  • Ensure quality and accuracy of field data, including notes, files, and site documentation
  • Maintain and operate survey equipment (Trimble GPS, total stations, and data collectors such as S5, S6, SX-12, R10, R12, and TSC7)
  • Transfer and manage field data within company systems
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and well-functioning field vehicle
  • Build strong working relationships with team members and clients
  • Follow Sambatek's safety, QA/QC, and surveying standards


Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in a Survey Crew Chief role
  • Strong field experience in construction staking, topographic surveys, ALTA surveys, and as-built surveys
  • Associate's degree in Land Surveying, Civil Engineering, or related field (or equivalent hands-on experience)
  • Ability to manage time effectively, meet deadlines, and stay within project budgets
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office and general computer applications
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to understand and retain both verbal and written direction
  • Valid driver's license required
  • CST Level III certification preferred, but not required
  • Willingness to travel within the region (up to 50%)


Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Physically mobile in and around construction sites and field assignments
  • Ability to carry survey equipment and supplies in remote, rural, or urban surroundings
  • Ability to work outdoors in all seasons of weather
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and walk long distances
