Surgical Assistant

Job Summary
Bayview Physicians Group is seeking a skilled and dedicated Surgical Assistant to support surgeons and the surgical team in delivering high-quality patient care throughout the perioperative process. Working under the direction of the surgeon, the Surgical Assistant plays a critical role in ensuring safe, efficient, and successful surgical procedures. This position assists with a variety of surgical specialties, maintains sterile technique, and contributes to positive patient outcomes through clinical expertise, teamwork, and attention to detail.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Serve as a first assistant during surgical procedures across multiple specialties, providing direct support to the surgeon before, during, and after surgery.
  • Prepare operating rooms for procedures by gathering equipment, instruments, and supplies according to surgeon preferences and procedural requirements.
  • Establish and maintain a sterile field while adhering to infection prevention and safety standards.
  • Assist with patient positioning, surgical site preparation, catheterization, and draping.
  • Anticipate the surgeon's needs throughout procedures by providing instruments, supplies, and technical support.
  • Perform intraoperative duties under the surgeon's direction, including:
    • Handling and operating surgical instruments and equipment
    • Managing suction and irrigation
    • Utilizing retractors and other surgical devices
    • Assisting with hemostasis and tissue exposure
    • Cutting sutures and assisting with wound closure
    • Applying dressings and securing drains as appropriate
  • Participate in sponge, sharps, and instrument counts according to established policies and procedures.
  • Inspect surgical instruments and equipment to ensure proper functionality prior to procedures.
  • Handle and label specimens in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with surgeons, nurses, and other team members regarding equipment needs, sterile field concerns, and procedural updates.
  • Support operating room turnover activities, including room setup and cleanup between cases.
  • Follow all patient safety protocols, including Universal Protocol and correct-site surgery procedures.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all HIPAA, federal, state, and organizational regulations.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, patient-centered environment focused on quality outcomes and continuous improvement.

Qualifications
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Assistant Program required
Certifications & Licensure
  • Current Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) credential through NBSTSA, NSAA, NCCSA, or an equivalent recognized certifying body required
  • Virginia Board of Medicine registration required for candidates practicing in Virginia
  • Current BLS certification (American Heart Association) preferred upon hire and required prior to providing direct patient care
Experience
  • One year of Surgical Assistant experience preferred


We offer a full-time benefits package and competitive pay ranging from $37-$60 per hour. Actual pay depends on specialty, experience schedule, and job duties.
