Summary

This position is with the U. S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), within the Directorate of Technical Support and Emergency Management (DTSEM), OSHA Technical Center, in the Industrial Hygiene Chemistry Division, located in Sandy, UT.

  • This position is at the full performance level.
  • This position is outside the bargaining unit.
  • This position is NOT remote. Selectee will be expected to report to the office above.


Duties

Help

Duties for the Supervisory Physical Scientist /Supervisory Chemist include but are not limited to the following:

  • Providing technical expertise for the operation of modern laboratory information management systems affecting traceability of instrumentation, reagents and standards, inventory, training and document control.
  • Supporting the technical and analytical needs of the Agency by serving as the OSHA technical authority for methods, techniques, and policies associated with assigned analytical area(s).
  • Receiving, processing, and analyzing air and bulk samples collected by compliance personnel during OSHA inspections.
  • Writing and reviewing summaries, reports, analyses, and position papers on a variety of topics for the Center and the Agency.
  • Preparing directives for the OSHA compliance program; reviewing reports or publications from NIOSH and other relevant information sources.

The Physical Science series (1301) has an Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR):

Basic Requirement:


  1. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.


or

  1. Combination of education and experience education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.


The Chemistry series (1320) has an Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR).

Basic Requirement:

  1. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.


or

  1. Combination of education and experience course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.


For the GS-13: Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-12 in the Federal Service.

Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.

Qualifying specialized experience for the GS-13 Supervisory Physical Scientist/Supervisory Chemist includes:

  • Advanced knowledge of industrial hygiene sampling and analysis for substances to which workers may be exposed.
  • Knowledge of and experience developing methods to be used for the collection of industrial hygiene samples.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with OSHA chemical exposure standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work with others in completing complex projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow laboratory policies and procedures.
