Summary

This position is located in the Division of Clinical Services, Pharmacy Branch, Northern Navajo Medical Center (NNMC) of the Shiprock Service Unit (SSU). The purpose of this position is to serve as the Supervisory Pharmacist, managing clinical pharmacy services, personnel processes, quality improvement programs, and pharmacy operations in support of the SSU's mission, vision, and values.

A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021).

Duties

Help

• Provides technical and administrative supervision to pharmacist clinicians assigned to pharmacist-led clinics in the outpatient department.
• Reviews and analyzes Outpatient Pharmacy records, reports and monitors other evidence of work production, expenditures, utilization of resources for the purpose of fund control, i.e. monitors and maintains outpatient pharmacy operating budget.
• Takes the appropriate health history, follows and adjusts the developed treatment plan and monitors the patient's outcome to the prescribed treatment plan. Provides pharmaceutical services to focus on therapeutic drug monitoring.
• Performs on a regular basis and which involve risk to patient's life, safety, health or well- being. Conducts authorized pharmacy clinics for examination, diagnosis and treatment of specialized patients.
• Make orders and interprets laboratory tests, 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitors, EKG's (for physician review) as needed. May refer to appropriate services as needed via consultations.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):

All pharmacists must meet all of the following basic requirements:

Degree

A doctoral degree in Pharmacy that is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Licensure

All applicants must have passed the North Pharmacist Licensure (NAPLEX) and the Multi-state Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE). Applicants also must be licensed to practice pharmacy in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Medical Requirement

Must be able to distinguish basic colors.

Experience

Applicant's qualifications background must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary to perform the work of the position. Pharmacy work requires knowledge of the use, clinical effects, and composition of medications, including their chemical, biological, and physical properties. Qualifying professional pharmacy experience may involve, but is not limited to:

• Dispensing medications prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners and providing information to health practitioners and patients about proper usage of medications and side effects;
• Evaluating medication use patterns and outcomes for patients in hospitals or managed care organizations;
• Performing administrative, consultative, or staff advisory work for a medical facility's pharmacy program;
• Planning, monitoring and evaluating medication programs or regimens;
• Establishing medication-handling procedures for the storage and preservation of medications;
• Researching medical literature and/or clinical medication information to provide accurate responses to inquiries; and/or
• Maintaining all medication records required by law.

Basic Requirements for the GS-13 (or equivalent) Grade Level

In addition to the licensure and educational requirements described above, a minimum of one year of professional pharmacy experience that is equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-12 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Providing oversight of the Pharmacy Clinical services and carrying out the Pharmacy functions; familiarity with collecting valid data for quarterly workload reports; preparing and maintaining departmental budget; assigning work for subordinates, evaluating work performance, and providing oversight of ongoing professional development of licensed staff and provides direct pharmaceutical services to all patients.

Additional information

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

• Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized.
• The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.
• Work is performed on regular and assigned basis; however, the incumbent may be required to be on call back duty or required to work beyond normal duty hours to complete assignments or to ensure coverage. At times, change in shifts may be required to meet the workload demands, complete a project/task, or alternate with other Pharmacists in responding to callbacks.
