Title: Structural Trades Supervisor

Department/ Location: Facilities/Principia College

Position Type: Full-time, 12-month

Summary

Responsible for leading a crew of carpenters, laborers, and painters in the maintenance, renovation, and preservation of campus building envelopes, structural systems, and interiors. Supervises daily operations with a work orders system, conducts quality-control inspections, coordinates with campus stakeholders and external contractors. Manages projects from planning through completion-including estimates, schedules, materials procurement, and budget oversight. Requires construction and project-management experience, supervisory ability, and a hands-on commitment to safety and workmanship.

Primary Responsibilities

Project Management and Planning
  • Manage building envelopes, structural systems, and interior maintenance and renovation from planning to completion
  • Develop estimates, schedules, layouts, and materials procurement
  • Ensure all work meets building codes, safety standards, and quality expectations
  • Coordinate with internal teams, campus departments, and external contractors to ensure efficient execution of work
  • Maintain quality standards that align with historic preservation requirements and contemporary architectural expectations across campus facilities (residences, athletics, academics, library, labs, assembly spaces, and arts venues)
  • Prepare regular project status reports, including progress, risks, and recommendations
  • Support planning for capital renewal and improvement initiatives

Maintenance Operations & Asset Management
  • Supervise and direct daily activities of the Structural Trades team
  • Promote a culture of safety, quality workmanship, and accountability
  • Utilize the work order management system to plan and track work
  • Coordinate with Facilities supervisors, project managers, and campus stakeholders on renovations and repairs to optimize productivity and minimize disruptions
  • Manage the Structural Trades operating budgets and monitor expenditures
  • Initiate purchase orders for materials, equipment, and contracted services
  • Conduct quality control inspections and communicate findings to ensure high standards are met
  • Develop and implement preventive and corrective maintenance programs to project campus assets
  • Partner with Life Safety and Chief Engineer on compliance and safety matters
  • Uphold OSHA and Workplace Safety policies and ensure proper training
  • Serve as B-team Leader over Structural Crew for weather events and facility-related incidents as needed
  • Provide after-hours support as needed to address urgent maintenance issues
  • Ensure workshops, yard, material and equipment storage areas, tools, and equipment and vehicles are kept clean, organized, and in good condition

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ten years of experience in building construction, structural trades, and project management
  • Five years of supervisory and team leadership experience
  • Strong knowledge of building codes, construction standards, and safety practices
  • Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, budgets, and schedules
  • Excellent project management, communication, and coordination skills
  • Ability and willingness to work alongside the Structural team when needed
  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in higher education, facilities, or an institutional setting preferred
  • Associate degree, military technical training, or certifications in related fields

Compensation and Benefits

We offer a competitive starting salary range for this position: $37.57-$44.61 hourly, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
