Full Job Description
Basic Function

HF Sinclair in El Dorado, KS is seeking a Supervisor of Process Engineering to lead the Process Engineering and Process Control departments while developing future HF Sinclair leaders.

Job Duties

  • Serves as a servant leader, developing engineers through mentorship, coaching, and performance feedback.
  • Builds and sustains a strong team culture grounded in psychological safety, technical excellence, accountability, and ownership - empowering engineers to raise concerns, challenge assumptions, and continuously improve.
  • Serves as a high-energy, visible refinery leader, setting vision, expectations, and direction for the Process Engineering and Process Control function in support of safe, reliable, and high-value operations.
  • Partners closely with operations and site leadership, translating complex technical risk into clear direction that teams can execute safely and effectively.
  • Establishes priorities, assigning work, setting performance standards, and holding the team accountable for results aligned with refinery objectives.
  • Develops employee succession plans by leading hiring, onboarding, training, competency development, and performance management.
  • Acts as a refinery-level technical authority through supervision and oversight, ensuring high-quality engineering outcomes across Process Safety Management.
  • Provides decisive supervisory leadership during unplanned events and outages by guiding team response, setting decision frameworks, ensuring appropriate resourcing, and reinforcing disciplined, risk-based decision making.
  • Oversees unit performance monitoring, process optimization, and energy efficiency efforts, ensuring engineering insights are translated into clear recommendations and measurable business value.
  • Sets governance and expectations for process control activities, including alarm management, automation, and digital initiatives, ensuring alignment with process intent and operational goals.
  • Sponsors and champions refinery initiatives, such as: Safe Operating Limits (SOL), Pressure Safety Valve (PSV) programs, Energy reduction efforts, Value creation initiatives, Corrosion and fouling, etc.
  • Provides T/A support from a Process Engineering perspective for each pant turnaround.

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their superior, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion.

Experience

  • A minimum of 8 years engineering experience in a refinery environment are required.
  • Preferred 3 years Supervisory experience


Education Level

A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering is required.

Required Skills

Ability to lead and direct the work of others. Working knowledge of commonly used engineering concepts and ability to apply this knowledge analytically and to stay abreast of new technology developments and processes is essential. Knowledge of Microsoft products and experience with engineering software. Advanced reading and writing skills, the ability to perform complex mathematical calculations, and the ability to communicate effectively with others, both written and verbally, are required.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility

Responsible for the supervision of approximately six engineers. May be responsible for overseeing outside contract engineers.

Work Conditions

Office, and field based with up to 20% travel by land and air required. Petroleum refinery, warehouse/plant environment, out-of-doors environment and driver based environment including but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels tanks, rotating equipment, and working in confined spaces. Subject to all temperatures varying road and weather conditions.

Physical Requirements

Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, lifting and/or carrying up to 50 lbs, climbing up to 200 ft, perceiving color differences, required to wear personal protective equipment as needed and a respirator in emergency situations (beards not permitted), ability to operate and drive all assigned company vehicles at company standard insurance rates is essential, valid State drivers license and proof of insurance required, and strenuous physical activity. Job conditions may require twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching or grasping and working in confined spaces.
