JOB SUMMARYUnder the general direction of a supervisor, assigns, reviews and participates in the work of staff responsible for providing vehicle maintenance. The Supervisor of Vehicle Maintenance is a first line, working supervisor who is responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of vehicles, parts and performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Performs related duties as required.
- Schedules, assigns, coordinates, prioritize and monitors work orders for vehicle and equipment in for repairs.
- Responsible for the maintenance of vehicle maintenance records and files, utilizing computer software programs; maintains complete records of attendance, personnel data and materials usage.
- Coordinates and schedules preventive maintenance program; in addition, the supervisor will manage and schedule the refurb/rebuild projects to assure timely completion.
- Insures that safe work methods and procedures are practices and that safe working conditions are maintained.
- Participates in the selection of vehicle mechanical staff.
- Provides or coordinates mechanical staff training.
- Reviews and evaluates the work of mechanical staff to ensure proper quality.
- Works with staff to correct deficiencies. Implements discipline procedures.
- Inspects new equipment vehicles to assure compliance with purchase specifications.
- Assists mechanical staff in diagnosing complex mechanical failures and appropriate repair procedures.
- Recommends equipment and vehicle repairs to be sent to outside repair facilities.
- Participates in budget process by researching and reviewing past vehicle repair and service activity, analyzing upcoming maintenance schedules, submitting recommendations and monitoring approved expenditures.
- Oversees fuel island maintenance as well as issuing fuel keys and granting access to employees city-wide for the fuel system.
- Finalizes all work orders ensuring proper labor, notes and parts are documented.
- Insures mechanics follow safety regulations while performing their duties.
- Review all vendor invoices and submits to manager for approval.
- Generate Key Performance Indicators (KPI) report(s) from FMIS. Define and produce standard maintenance reports on a weekly, monthly, and as needed basis.
- Research, evaluate, recommend for adoption, budget, and implementation process improvements for a more cost effective and sustainable vehicle maintenance operation.
- For Positions in Vehicle Maintenance (Department of Operations)
- Oversees all Vehicle Maintenance mechanics in the complex mechanical work performed in the maintenance and repairs of over 750 light duty, medium duty, heavy trucks, construction equipment, road maintenance, and equipment, such as gasoline, diesel and alternative fueled trucks and equipment, including but not limited to; heavy duty dump trucks, refuse trucks, tractors, vac trucks, flushers, sweepers, skid steer, rollers, power shovels, cranes, man-lift devices hoists, trenching machines, backhoes, generators, pumps, large riding mowers, and pneumatic tools.
- For Positions in the Police Department
- Oversees complex mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of Police Department vehicles and equipment including police cruisers, motorcycles, personnel carriers, assault vehicles, trucks, vans, SUV and other related support equipment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES - Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

- Excellent verbal and written and communication skills.
- Strong ability to deal effectively with various departments and vendors for vehicle repair and design.
- Good technical knowledge of the practices, procedures and methods used in the repair and maintenance of automotive and heavy vehicles and in the operation of a maintenance facility.
- Skilled in ability to read and interpret automotive blueprints and electronic diagrams and in the use of diagnostic equipment, all journeymen level mechanical technician tools and shop equipment.
- Ability to assign, supervise and review the work of skilled mechanics to obtain effective results with established time frames.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards, OSHA regulations and general safety precautions in the vehicular technician's trade.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and industry-specific vehicle maintenance and fuel software to keep records, input maintenance data, work order and prepare reports.
- Ability to lift and utilize the tools of the trade and to meet all physical requirements of the job.
- Ability to operate a variety of vehicles.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSGraduation from an accredited high school or Trade School and seven (7) years of experience in the repair and maintenance of vehicles, two (2) years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: At time of appointment, possession of a valid CDL driver's license.Scope of Examination: Qualified applicants will be evaluated on the quality of related experience, education and training as documented on the application and supplement.
