SUPERVISOR OF REAL TIME POWER TRADING

Job Description:

POSITION PURPOSE

This position is located at our Headquarters building in Bismarck, ND and is not a remote position.This position is responsible for leading Basin Electric's 24/7 real-time trading operations and ensuring the reliable, complaint, and economically optimized delivery of energy across multiple regional markets, including WECC, SPP, CAISO, and MISO.

This position provides operational direction and leadership to a team of Real Time Power Traders, oversees and coordinates asset dispatch decisions, and ensures compliance with all regulatory and risk-management policies.

This position serves as a key liaison to internal partners and external entities, including Compliance, Analytics, IT, Asset Management, executive leadership, and RTOs. The role supports trading strategy implementation, drives process improvement, develops team capability, and ensures real-time market operations align with organizational objectives, risk tolerance, and performance expectations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Direct and manage day-to-day real-time trading desk operations to ensure reliability, compliance, and profitability within approved risk parameters.
  • Supervise and develop Real Time Power Traders, including staffing, training, coaching, and performance evaluation.
  • Manage shift schedules and coverage to maintain continuous 24/7 operations across all markets.
  • Serve as the primary escalation contact for market or system events; lead internal and external communication and resolution activities.
  • Ensure daily compliance with NERC, FERC, state, and Basin Electric risk-management policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and evaluate desk performance, P&L results, and KPIs; provide performance feedback and corrective action where needed.
  • Partner with Risk and Compliance teams to implement and enforce frameworks; promptly address and document any deviations.
  • Coordinate with Market Analytics, IT, and Asset Management to resolve operational issues and implement process improvements.
  • Lead review and maintenance of desk procedures, controls, and documentation to ensure consistency, accuracy, and audit readiness.
  • Participate in planning and performance-review meetings with management to align desk operations with department and organizational objectives.
  • Represent the real-time desk in internal coordination meetings and RTO-related discussions as assigned.
  • Conduct post-event analysis and lessons-learned reviews to identify improvements and enhance operational resilience.
  • Support onboarding, system training, and change-management efforts related to new markets, systems, or compliance requirements.
  • Maintain clear communication with Traders, supervisor peers, and management to ensure smooth information flow and alignment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in business, math, or a related discipline.
  • 7 years of experience in real-time physical power trading, energy portfolio management, or power market operations.
  • A NERC system operator certification may be required and maintained in good standing while performing the requirements of this position.
  • A valid driver's license and ability to travel occasionally by car, Cooperative plane, or commercial plane.

This position is identified as a Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) related position, which may allow physical and/or logical access to Bulk Electric System (BES) cyber related assets or systems. This position may allow access to privileged information relating to such assets or systems. This position will be required to strictly adhere to all Basin Electric policies, procedures, and programs applicable to the Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • MBA or graduate degree in business, energy, or engineering.
  • Experience in a leadership, supervisory, or mentoring role.
  • Experience in developing or executing real-time trading strategies with direct P&L accountability.
  • Familiarity with strategic planning, budgeting, and performance management.
  • Expertise in data analytics, market dashboards, or real-time decision support tools.


PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

This position requires frequent sitting and standing/walking; and occasionally reaching below and above shoulder level, use of keyboard/computer, bending, kneeling, lifting/carrying up to 10 pounds, and pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds. It also requires finger dexterity and hand coordination. This position requires good hearing and vision, and the ability to speak. Activities are performed in an office environment with a typical trade floor layout that lacks the traditional privacy that an office provides.
