The State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is currently seeking a skilled and dedicated Supervising Nurse to join our Inpatient Unit team. This 24-hour unit provides comprehensive care to individuals experiencing mental health challenges and co-occurring disorders. The ideal candidate will bring strong clinical expertise, leadership, and a commitment to delivering high-quality, compassionate care.

Position Highlights:

  • FACILITY: Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC)
  • UNIT: Inpatient Unit
  • LOCATION: New Haven, CT
  • SCHEDULE: Full-time (40 hours), 3rd Shift, 11:30pm - 8:00am
  • Week 1: Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday. Days Off: Friday & Wednesday

FOR SECOND AND THIRD SHIFT POSITIONS - YOU MAY BE APPROVED FOR AN ADDITIONAL COMPENSATION BONUS:
  • Each Registered Nurse who is permanently assigned to the second or third shift may be eligible to receive a "recruitment and retention" yearly bonus of three thousand dollars ($3,000.00).
  • This bonus shall be pro-rated for part-time Registered Nurses.
  • In order to be eligible for this bonus, the Employee must have completed one year of service in the registered nurse classification.

  • Monitor documentation and records for accuracy, compliance, and quality standards.

  • Serve as a liaison across departments and partner agencies to support integrated care.

CMHC is an urban community mental health center with an exceptional 50-year tradition of serving individuals with serious mental illness. Founded in 1966, the CMCH cares for more than 5,000 people a year in a variety of services. CMHC treats individuals suffering from severe and persistent psychosis, depression, anxiety, addictions (including alcoholism, cocaine, and gambling) and those with co-existing mental health and addiction problems.

Once the transaction is completed, you will receive a confirmation email from Nursys and the verification will be available to the DPH. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for supervising nursing staff engaged in professional nursing activities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Plans, organizes and directs health services for an assigned program, unit(s), facility or geographical area;
  • Ensures that goals, objectives and work performed are consistent with standards and that quality care is provided to individuals;
  • Provides clinical guidance to nursing staff;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of experience as a Registered Nurse in a hospital, regional, institutional or psychiatric setting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • A Bachelor's degree in nursing may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.
  • A Master's degree in nursing may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience supervising and working within an inpatient psychiatric hospital.
  • Experience providing education and guidance as leadership.
  • Experience enforcing agency policies.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a current license or temporary permit as a Registered Nurse in Connecticut OR hold a Multistate or Compact Registered Nurse license.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to be fluent in a foreign language or proficient in the use of the American Sign Language in certain designated positions.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain individuals; may have some exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to disagreeable conditions.
