Responsibilities

  • Administer labor agreements and manage employee discipline and disputes.
  • Attend training sessions to maintain necessary certifications for environmental issues.
  • Generate reports and oversee timekeeping for payroll.
  • Collaborate with personnel across all levels and provide training as needed.

Job Description
The Superintendent of Maintenance is responsible for the efficient operation of the maintenance and purchasing/inventory control functions at the New Haven Division. This position is under the general direction of the Director of Equipment and Maintenance in the handling of day-to-day responsibilities, including employee's discipline and most labor union matters. Technical assistance and maintenance policy administration are also provided by the Director of Equipment and Maintenance.

Examples of Duties

  1. Responsible for directing the day-to-day operations required to store, service, and repair the vehicle fleet assigned to the division. This includes all duties necessary to administer servicing and cleaning programs, preventative maintenance programs, correction of mechanical defects, major repair of vehicles, rebuilding of components and inventory control.
  2. Directs the work of the Maintenance Supervisors, inventory personnel, and all secretarial/clerical personnel assigned to the maintenance function.
  3. Prepares daily schedules of buses to meet the demands for scheduled bus service including the availability of buses for limited service, and equipment to be held for servicing.
  4. Administers the Labor Agreement for bargaining unit employees; resolves employees disputes; responsible for discipline and counseling of union and staff employees when necessary to apply Company's rules and regulations. Responsible for planning for work force composition and screening, interviewing and selecting candidates for maintenance positions.
  5. Attends required training and maintains certification to oversee licensing, certification and operation of all environmental issues and compliance.
  6. Responsible for preparing reports and correspondence as necessary, prepares or directs staff to prepare data for monthly reports.
  7. Work cooperatively with all levels of personnel.
  8. Attends in-service training, seminars or other opportunities for professional development as made available by the Agency. Provides training for Agency personnel as required. Actively participates in staff meeting, trainings, etc.
  9. Has thorough working knowledge of Agency policies and procedures.
  10. Oversees employee timekeeping reports provided to the payroll department.
  11. Performs evaluation, review and goal setting for subordinates.
  12. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Graduation from high school or satisfactory GED test score and completion of two (2) years of advance schooling with major course work in; automotive or heavy vehicle repair, mechanic engineering or training in a related field are required.
  2. Five (5) years experience in varied phases of fleet maintenance and repair with at least one full year of significant responsibility as a supervisor or department manager is required. An appropriate degree or additional professional experience may be substituted for a portion of the experience or educational requirement. In addition, experience with the use of computer systems applications in fleet maintenance and inventory control is required.
  3. This position requires extensive knowledge of the principles and techniques of fleet, inventory management, and the ability to administer the labor contract in conjunction with Company rules and regulations.
  4. Proficient in software programs (word processing, spreadsheet and database), Internet applications and utilization of all relevant office equipment. The ability to learn quickly internal software programs. Must be able to handle confidential information.
  5. The ability to prioritize projects and have excellent communication (especially verbal) interpersonal skills, tact and diplomacy. The ability to communicate ideas effectively orally and in writing, to establish effective working relationships with other employees and when necessary, members of the public. Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  6. Valid drivers' license (CDL is desirable) and the ability to be insured by our insurance company throughout employment. Individual may be required to travel in the course of their daily work.
  7. Flexible availability, including nights and weekends as needed to support a 3-shift 24/7/365 operation.
