Job Summary

This role is ideal for a construction leader who thrives in the field and wants to drive successful substation construction work from planning through installation. You will partner closely with subcontractor supervision, field engineering, and craft leadership to keep work progressing safely, on schedule, and to quality expectations. In this position, you will help coordinate technical requirements, support installation of substation equipment and work packages, and ensure teams have the information, materials, and direction needed to execute efficiently. You will play a key role in maintaining strong subcontractor and direct hire craft relationships, communicating project priorities clearly, and helping deliver substation projects in alignment with Black and Veatch standards, procedures, and contractual commitments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and monitor day-to-daysubstation construction activities to support compliance with the CPM schedule, including tracking installation progress, milestones, and completed work quantities.
  • Partner with subcontractors to resolve field issues related to drawings, technical information, schedule, safety, quality, quantity tracking, and cost reporting.
  • Monitor construction productivity, progress, and cost performance for assigned substation work and communicate updates to project leadership.
  • Take proactive action to maintain schedule, productivity, and performance targets.
  • Facilitate subcontractor supervision meetings and support daily, weekly, and monthly planning for substation field execution.
  • Develop and maintain short term interval plans for assigned substation scopes of work.
  • Support plan/progress development, implementation, tracking and reporting.
  • Implement and manage field quality and document control programs.
  • Manage craft tooling inventory, tracking, and accountability.
  • Coordinate with Site leadership and operations for craft resource needs, forecasting and logistics
  • Create recovery and corrective action plans when progress or productivity targets are at risk.
  • Plan and maintain required materials, equipment, manpower, and other resources on site to support upcoming substation work.
  • Track and report punch list completion for craft and subcontractor work scopes.
  • Maintain accurate daily site records and field documentation, produce and submit daily reports.
  • Review subcontractor timesheets, installed quantity reports, and progress payment requests for accuracy and alignment with completed work.
  • Monitor Technical Service Representative daily logs and review associated timesheets as needed.
  • Coordinate subcontractor daily and weekly work plans with other discipline leads and the Construction Manager to support integrated site execution.
  • Ensure assigned subcontractors perform work in accordance with subcontract scope, schedule, and project requirements.
  • Build strong working relationships with assigned subcontractors and field teams to support collaboration and execution success.
  • Support the Field Subcontract Administrator with extra work authorization requests, including RFMPs and WAs.
  • Assist Construction Engineering with compiling and responding to contractor information requests.
  • Oversee execution of work packages and installation of substation equipment.
  • Develop and distribute Job Hazard Analyses for major erection and installation packages within assigned scope.
  • Identify potential back charges and out-of-scope work and escalate concerns to the Construction Manager.
  • Support commercial recovery efforts tied to subcontractor performance and scope execution.
  • Provide guidance, training, and day-to-day leadership to field engineers or other direct reports, as applicable.
  • Champion compliance with safety and quality standards across all assigned responsibilities.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and help teams adapt to process or execution changes in the field.
  • Supervise subcontractors and field engineers supporting substation construction execution.


Preferred Qualifications

Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field preferred. Equivalent hands-on field leadership experience in substation construction, electrical infrastructure, or heavy industrial projects will also be considered. Prior training or demonstrated experience in reporting safety, quality, cost, and schedule performance is preferred, along with construction management and contract administration experience that supports successful substation field execution.

Preferred skills:
  • Working knowledge of substation construction practices, installation sequencing, and field execution
  • Strong understanding of construction safety requirements in active substation environments
  • Ability to coordinate subcontractors, manage field issues, and maintain productive craft relationships
  • Strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills to support schedule and execution goals
  • Knowledge of constructability, equipment installation, and integrated field coordination across disciplines
  • Experience with productivity tracking, installed quantities, cost awareness, and field documentation
  • Clear communication and field leadership skills for working with subcontractors, field engineering, and project teams


Minimum Qualifications

3+ years experience of construction field leadership on equivalent projects. Valid Driver's License. OSHA 10 certification preferred. Training on reporting safety, cost, quality, and schedule information preferred. Construction management and contract administration training preferred.

Physical Demands:
• Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds.

• Climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders and scaffolds.
• Work up to a 12 hour shift doing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and other outside conditions.

• Requires working in very hot (above 90 F degrees) or very cold (below 32F degrees) temperatures and exposure to inclement weather such as dust, wind, snow, rain, etc.
