Job Description:
Catapult is seeking a Substation Protection & Control Engineer for a full-time, remote position. This engineer will design, engineer, and implement protection and control systems for high-voltage substations ranging from approximately 12 kV through 500 kV. The role supports both greenfield and brownfield projects and works closely with physical, civil, structural, transmission, distribution, and commissioning teams. A Texas PE license is strongly preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop Protection & Control designs for high-voltage substations, including new construction, expansions, upgrades, and modernization projects
- Prepare and review one-line and three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, P&C schematics, relay and control panel drawings, wiring and interconnection diagrams, cable schedules, and bills of materials
- Develop and review protective relay settings and coordination
- Design protection schemes for power transformers, transmission and distribution lines, bus systems, circuit breakers, capacitor banks, and reactors
- Develop control logic, trip schemes, alarms, interlocks, and breaker control circuits
- Support SCADA, RTU, and substation automation integration
- Perform engineering calculations and technical studies for P&C systems
- Review vendor drawings and equipment documentation
- Review existing drawings, field information, and as-built documentation for brownfield upgrades
- Provide engineering support during construction, testing, commissioning, and energization
- Respond to RFIs and resolve technical design issues
- Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and project coordination meetings
- Ensure designs comply with client standards, IEEE, NERC, NEC, and industry best practices
- Provide technical guidance to engineers, designers, project managers, and field teams
Required Experience/Skills:
- Hands-on experience performing Substation Protection & Control engineering
- Strong understanding of electric utility transmission and distribution systems
- Experience developing P&C drawings and electrical schematics
- Knowledge of protective relaying and relay coordination
- Ability to read and develop one-line, three-line, AC/DC schematic, wiring, logic, and substation design drawings
- Experience supporting electric utility, EPC, or power delivery projects
- Experience with several of the following: transformer differential, line differential, distance, overcurrent, bus differential, and breaker failure protection; synchronism check; under/over-voltage and under/over-frequency protection; automatic reclosing; transfer trip and communications-assisted schemes; CT and PT applications; DC control and station battery systems
- Ability to work independently in a remote engineering environment
- Strong communication, documentation, and project coordination skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and engineering deadlines
Nice-to-Haves:
- Texas Professional Engineer (PE) license
- Experience with substations ranging from 12 kV through 500 kV
- Relay platform experience with SEL, GE, Siemens, and/or ABB / Hitachi Energy
- Software experience with ASPEN OneLiner, ETAP, CAPE, SKM, AutoCAD, MicroStation, and/or Bluebeam
- Experience with IEC 61850 and digital substation technologies
- SCADA and RTU integration experience
- Utility brownfield upgrade and substation modernization experience
- Field commissioning or relay testing experience
- Background with an electric utility, EPC firm, engineering consulting company, OEM, or power delivery contractor
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
