Substation Physical Designer / Engineer Location: Dallas, TX / Houston, TX / St. Louis, MO / Denver, CO / Remote

About the RoleUtillico is currently seeking qualified candidates for a Substation Designer opening. The Designer will support engineers and technicians by providing technical drafting and design support for infrastructure related designs with limited supervision. This position is open to any office location or fully remote.
The ideal candidate will have experience in utility substation design, construction package development, and drafting/design software such as AutoCAD and MicroStation. Candidates with experience working for electric utilities and/or utility consulting firms are strongly encouraged to apply.
This position will be in Dallas, TX, Houston, TX, St. Louis, MO, Denver, CO, or Remote.
Key Responsibilities- Under general supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from physical work sites, surveys, concepts, vendor drawings, blueprints, schematics, technical drawings, rough sketches, diagrams, and written or verbal specifications to support substation structural drafting and design activities.
- Review and verifying drawing accuracy, dimensions, material quantities, design revisions, change orders, and interpretation of contract plans and specifications, escalating technical issues as appropriate.
- Work with cross-functional teams, including structural, electrical, and civil disciplines, in executing substation project work.
- Assure plans adhere to applicable city, state, and federal regulations, as well as client and industry standards.
- Prepare multiple phases of substation designs and plan packages.
- Ensure the specification of dimensions, materials, and procedures for assigned substation projects, ensuring compliance with contract requirements.
- Work collaboratively with other technical professionals on assigned project phases, segments, checks, and tasks.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to UtilliCo's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Support Engineering for substation projects, including foundations and structural steel detailing.
- Learn and follow client standards, practices, and procedures to ensure deliverables meet expectations.
- Comply with UtilliCo's standards, procedures, and processes.
- Collaborate on design issues and seek guidance from other senior team members as needed.
- Develop design and construction work packages for transmission substations.
- Review and assess client-provided scopes of work, standards, and engineering requirements.
- Physical design for transmission substations including, but not limited to; high voltage electrical equipment layouts, conduit design, grounding design, lighting design, lightning protection design, protection one-lines and three-lines, and wiring diagrams using AutoCAD. Knowledge of MicroStation is a plus.
- Develop detailed construction drawings and engineering packages.
- Prepare Bills of Material (BOM), construction estimates, and supporting documentation.
- Coordinate with engineering teams, utility personnel, and field crews.
- Submit completed construction packages for review, approval, and revisions.
- Conduct field visits, including collecting measurements, photos, and existing utility data when required.
- Communicate effectively with clients and internal teams through email, phone, and Microsoft Teams.
- Perform QA/QC reviews of engineering deliverables to ensure quality and compliance.
Required Qualifications- High school diploma required
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting/Design or Certification required.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent technical degree), preferred.
- Minimum of 3+ years of experience in utility substation design.
- 6+ years of experience working with electric utilities or utility consulting firms preferred.
- Understanding of substation design from 500kv to 4kV.
- Working knowledge of NESC (National Electrical Safety Code) requirements.
- Understanding of single-phase and three-phase power systems, transformers, conductors, and pole configurations.
- Demonstrated experience supporting substation Engineering scope on utility or power infrastructure projects.
- Familiar with engineering and design support principles, practices, processes, methods, and techniques.
- Familiar with relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
- Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and comply with company policies.
- Able to uphold workplace safety and ability to abide by UtilliCo's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Knowledge of industry standards and practices
- Familiarity with BIM (Building Information Modeling) processes
- Strong understanding of engineering principles and construction methods
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Able to produce Plans, Sections and Elevation Views
- Experience with the Preparation of Bill of Materials, and Specifications
- Ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering documents
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Knowledge of building codes and regulations

- Experience with BlueBeam software
- Familiarity with computer-aided drafting software, such as AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
- Capable of producing plans, section and elevation views, assembling shop drawings, and preparing bills of materials.
- Excellent research and evaluation skills with analytical mindset.
- Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, principles, spreadsheets, and tools.
• Experience using drafting and design software such as:
- AutoCAD
- AutoCAD Electrical(Revit, SDS)
- 3D CAD experience preferred.
- MicroStation
- Proven experience in Microsoft Office Applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point)
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and communication abilities.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple projects and deadlines.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Experience with utility construction standards and specifications.
- Experience developing construction estimates and material takeoffs.
