Position Overview

Kiewit Power Engineering is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer III to support the design and execution of high-voltage substation projects throughout North America. This role will focus on engineering and detailed design efforts for greenfield and brownfield substations ranging from 12kV through 500kV on both engineering-only and EPC projects.

The successful candidate will serve as a technical contributor responsible for developing engineering deliverables, supporting project execution, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and assisting in the mentorship of junior engineers and designers. This position offers the opportunity to work on some of the largest and most complex power delivery projects in the industry while collaborating closely with Kiewit's construction and commissioning teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop substation engineering packages for transmission and distribution projects from 12kV through 500kV.
  • Prepare and review:
    • One-line and three-line diagrams
    • AC/DC schematics
    • Protection and control drawings
    • Relay panel layouts
    • Wiring diagrams
    • Communications diagrams
    • Substation physical layouts
    • Grounding and lightning protection plans
    • Equipment installation details
  • Perform engineering calculations including:
    • Ground grid analysis
    • Equipment sizing
    • Station service loading
    • Short circuit studies
    • Relay coordination studies
    • Voltage drop calculations
  • Develop technical specifications and equipment purchase requisitions for:
    • Power transformers
    • Circuit breakers
    • Switches
    • Instrument transformers
    • Protective relays
    • Bus systems
  • Coordinate with civil, structural, protection & controls, transmission line, and construction teams.
  • Participate in design reviews, client meetings, and constructability reviews.
  • Review vendor drawings and equipment submittals.
  • Support commissioning, startup, and field engineering activities as required.
  • Mentor entry-level engineers, designers, and design coordinators.
  • Maintain compliance with NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and NEMA standards.

Responsibilities
• Performs Load List and equipment sizing calculations under the supervision of a more senior engineer. Solves problems using well established scientific principles.
• Conducts routine technical assignments with some oversight from experienced personnel.
• Knowledge of electrical power study tools like ETAP and/or SKM and being able to write technical Load Flow, Short Circuit, and Motor Starting reports.
• Develops small to mid-size project or proposals.
• Works with designers to develop engineering and design documents as needed for the project.
• Considers multiple solutions and makes good decisions based on good data analysis.
• Recognizes, troubleshoots and resolves design constraints and issues. Applies economic analysis to determine best cost solutions.
• Initiates development of personal objectives aligned with those of the organization.
• Seeks feedback and uses it effectively.
• Has good understanding of NEC, NFPA 70E, ANSI/NEMA, PIP, and the IEEE Standards and how to apply it to design an electrical system.
• Develops electrical data sheets for electrical equipment.
• Develops low voltage schematics.
• Coordinates with designers, drafters for producing electrical design drawings.
• Review quotations, purchasing various electrical equipment, prepare Bid Tab evaluations.
• Conducts routine technical assignments with some oversight.
• Questions accepted ways of doing things and actively seeks opportunities to try new ideas.
• Utilize codes and standards to complete assignments.
• Identifies changes in the scope of work during a small project and produces design changes as needed to stay within budget and schedule.
• Recognizes the importance of customer needs.
• Performs assigned work efficiently and effectively to maximize person productivity.
• Leads quality checks of the design and engineering of a small to mid-size project to ensure accuracy.
• Establishes credibility in terms of technical competency.

Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering minimum required.
• 4-10 years' minimum relevant experience in refining and petrochemical industry.
• Receives little to no instruction on routine work and detailed instruction on new assignment from more experienced engineer. Receives guidance on high risk or advanced conditions.
• Can provides guidance to less experienced engineers.
• Adjusts to varying demands of work and performs well.
• Develops and presents work in well-constructed written and verbal presentations. Clearly conveys messages and ideas, gains understanding.
• Works collaboratively across departments and involves others in solving problems. Initiates meetings within own team, other disciplines or internal customers for clarity on work.
• Supports project teams and departments in a positive and productive manner. Works well with other to accomplish common goals and objectives.
• Serves as point of contact for external or internal customers.
• Follows through on commitments made to internal and external customers.
• Able to manage multiple responsibilities with set expectations and meet deadlines.
• Able to specify actions to take when standards or contract requirements are not met.
• PE registration should be achieved within 6-12 months.

Working Conditions

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • 5 to 8 years of substation engineering experience.
  • Experience supporting transmission and distribution projects up to 500kV.
  • Strong understanding of utility substation design principles.

  • Experience preparing engineering design packages and construction deliverables.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within 12 months.
  • EPC project experience.
  • Utility or consulting engineering experience.
