Overview
The Substation Design Engineer will be responsible for the design of deliverables associated with substation projects supporting one of our largest electric utility clients in Southern California. The substation Protection & Control design deliverables include one-line & three-line diagrams, AC & DC elementary & logic diagrams, front & rear panel elevations and wiring, supervisory & control drawings, electrical vendor equipment wiring diagrams, complete cable schedule and bill of materials. The substation physical design deliverables include general arrangement drawings, electrical equipment plan & elevation drawings, above & below grade conduit & grounding drawings, relay house layout and complete bill of materials. The candidate will report directly to the Substation Design Manager.

- Performs substation P&C and/or physical design, including the preparation of field notes, drawings, specifications, and estimates.
- Performs careful QA/QC review activities submitted by junior engineers to ensure a quality product.
- Prepares computer assisted design and construction drawings of a complex nature with neatness and a minimum of errors.
- Perform engineering calculations such AC and DC load calculations required to properly size auxiliary systems.
- Perform engineering calculations such as conduit and bus sizing, lighting & lightning analysis, and grounding grid analysis.
- Ensure all designs conform to client and industry standards.
- Communicate and coordinate project activities with project manager, client, and others as needed.
- Utilize client and/or company information system to track and update design activities.
- Attend job site meetings to gather scope of work.
- May provide field support during construction.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
- 5-8 years of experience working in substation design or similar with utility or consulting engineering firm.
- Proficient using Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Excel, Word, and Outlook).
- Strong analytical, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
- Experience with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred
- Professional Engineer’s License in Electrical Engineering preferred but not required.
- Experience with substation design and construction standards for electric utilities in California is highly desirable.

Wage Data Per State Requirements
Salary will be between $105,000 to 130,000 per year, based on experience.
