Steel Detailing Manager oversees the creation of detailed 3D models, shop, and erection drawings used to fabricate and install structural steel. They lead teams of detailers, ensure compliance with AISC and OSHA standards, and coordinate with clients, engineers, and fabricators to meet project deadlines.
Key Responsibilities- Team Leadership: Manage, train, and mentor a team of internal (and sometimes external) steel detailers.
- Project Management: Allocate workloads, monitor project progress, and enforce fabrication deadlines to meet client requirements.
- Technical Oversight: Review architectural and engineering designs to generate highly accurate 3D models and 2D blueprints using BIM software (such as Tekla Structures or AutoCAD).
- Quality Assurance: Ensure all shop drawings and erection plans adhere to industry specifications (e.g., AISC, AWS codes) and eliminate clashes before fabrication.
- Communication: Manage RFIs (Requests for Information), track change orders, and serve as the main point of contact between the detailing department, fabricators, erectors, and structural engineers.
Qualifications & Requirements- Experience: 10+ years of structural steel detailing experience, with at least 2 to 5 years in a management or leadership role.
- Software Skills: Advanced proficiency in 3D detailing and modeling software; Tekla Structures is the industry standard and most strongly preferred.
- Industry Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of steel fabrication processes, connection design, and erection procedures. Deep knowledge of AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction) standards.
- Education: A Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field is often preferred, though equivalent, extensive industry experience is highly valued.
