Position Summary

Mesabi Metallics is seeking an experienced Design Engineer specializing in Structural Engineering, responsible for leading and managing the design, analysis, and execution of structural components for steel industry projects involving iron ore mining, beneficiation, pelletization, and downstream iron & steel making. The incumbent possesses expertise in steel structures essential to support the heavy industrial demands of the steel sector.

Job Responsibilities
  • Lead structural engineering efforts for design, analysis, and review of steel structures used in iron ore mining, beneficiation, pelletization, and downstream iron & steel making.
  • Develop and validate structural designs for equipment foundations, support structures, conveyors, silos, buildings, and other industrial infrastructure.
  • Perform structural analysis using software tools (STAAD Pro, SAP2000, ETABS, etc.) to ensure safety, stability, and compliance with industry standards.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including civil, mechanical, electrical, and process engineers to ensure integrated project delivery.
  • Review structural drawings, technical specifications, and design documents to ensure accuracy and compliance with codes (AISC, ACI, ASCE, ASTM).
  • Provide technical support during construction including site inspections, quality control, and resolving structural engineering issues.
  • Collaborate with contractors, vendors, and regulatory authorities to address design queries and modifications during project execution.
  • Monitor project progress, schedules, and budgets, ensuring timely completion of structural engineering deliverables.
  • Ensure compliance with US codes, OSHA regulations, and environmental safety standards.
  • Prepare and present technical reports, structural calculations, and project documentation.
  • Mentor junior structural engineers and foster knowledge sharing within the team.

Skills and Qualifications
  • 7 to 15 years of proven experience in structural engineering for the steel, mining, or mineral processing industry.
  • Strong knowledge of structural design for heavy industrial projects, especially iron ore mining, pellet plants, and beneficiation plants.
  • Proficient in structural analysis and design software (STAAD Pro, SAP2000, ETABS, AutoCAD, Revit).
  • In-depth understanding of US codes and standards including AISC, ACI, ASCE, OSHA.
  • Experience with steel fabrication drawings and construction support.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication, coordination, and leadership abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and in a dynamic project environment.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent certification.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is a plus.
  • Experience with 3D modeling and BIM software.
  • Familiarity with sustainability practices and environmental compliance.

Education
  • Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering with a structural focus, or equivalent.

Physical Requirements
  • This position is a mixture of field work and office duties. Field work will be conducted daily throughout the year so exposure to the elements (rain, snow, cold, heat, etc) is to be expected. The office duties will require work in front of a laptop, desk, and phone.

Salary Range:
  • $120,000 - $150,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
