Structural Designer / Design Checker

The ideal candidate is a hands-on structural designer/detailer who understands how things are actually fabricated. They can work independently in solidworks, thoroughly check their own and others' drawings, catch problems before they reach the shop, and communicate effectively with engineers and fabrication personnel.

Experience with emissions reduction systems for combustion turbines is highly desirable, but strong structural steel fabrication/design experience is the primary requirement.

This is an important role within the engineering team, helping increase design capacity and eliminate bottlenecks in the drawing review and checking process.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create, modify, detail, and check structural steel fabrication and assembly drawings for emissions reduction equipment and related systems.
  • Review drawings for accuracy, completeness, dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, weld details, and constructability.
  • Perform detailed design/drafting checks before drawings are released for fabrication.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, P&IDs, structural requirements, and customer documentation.
  • Work closely with engineers, project managers, fabricators, and manufacturing personnel to resolve design issues and improve manufacturability.
  • Identify discrepancies, conflicts, missing information, and potential fabrication issues and communicate corrections to the appropriate team members.
  • Develop and maintain accurate 2D CAD drawings, layouts, details, and fabrication documentation.
  • Incorporate engineering revisions and customer changes into drawings while maintaining document accuracy and revision control.
  • Support the development of structural components, platforms, frames, supports, skids, ductwork-related structures, and other fabricated assemblies.
  • Assist with drawing standards, templates, checking procedures, and continuous improvement of the design/drafting process.
  • Help manage drawing workload and priorities to meet project schedules and fabrication deadlines.

Required Qualifications
  • Experience designing and/or detailing structural steel fabrication and fabricated industrial equipment.
  • Strong Solidworks or other 3D software, Inventor, etc proficiency is required.
  • Ability to read and interpret structural, mechanical, and fabrication drawings.
  • Strong understanding of steel fabrication, welding, dimensions, tolerances, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Previous experience performing drawing/design checks with a strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to identify design issues from a fabrication and constructability perspective, not simply review drawings for drafting errors.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize work in a deadline-driven engineering/manufacturing environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with industrial equipment, energy, power generation, combustion turbines, emissions-control equipment, or related process equipment.
  • Experience with structural steel frames, platforms, supports, skids, ducting, or similar fabricated systems.
  • Familiarity with ASME, AWS, AISC, or other applicable structural/fabrication standards.
  • Experience working directly with fabrication, manufacturing, welding, or shop personnel.
  • Engineering or technical degree/certificate is a plus, but equivalent hands-on design and fabrication experience will be considered.
