Job Description

We have an opening for an Environment Safety & Health (ESH) Integrated Safety Team (IST) Leader supporting the Strategic Deterrent (SD) Directorate at our Livermore, CA location to provide leadership for all ESH activities. The IST supports over 350 programmatic activities in 44 facilities that include two Hazard Category 2 and five Hazard Category 3 nonreactor nuclear facilities, in addition to other moderate to high hazard facilities and operations. You will lead a multidisciplinary team of 35+ professional and technical staff members.You will be responsible for ensuring the flow-down and the implementation of institutional ESH policies and programs within the SD-S200 facilities, programs, and line organizations and will provide consultative advice using leading-edge principles, technologies, other best practices. This position will be in the ESH Integrated Safety Teams Department and matrixed to the SD Principal Associate Directorate (PAD).

This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week, after a probationary period.

You will
  • Direct development and implementation of the ESH Program for SD, covering industrial, laser, radiological, ergonomics, explosives, environmental, and chemical/hazardous materials safety.
  • Advise SD leadership on Integrated Safety Management, ESH policy interpretation, and alignment of PAD activities with Laboratory requirements and ISM principles.
  • Serve as a safety Subject Matter Expert in internal and external engagements, including representing SDin audits and assessments.
  • Partner with Authorizing Individuals, Responsible Individuals, Principal Investigators, and other SMEs to develop work control documents and support effective work planning and operational stewardship.
  • Assess SD risk posture and advise senior management on staffing, resource allocation, and mitigation strategies for high-consequence or specialized activities.
  • Manage the SD IST annual budget and resource allocation, balancing ESH coverage, cost optimization, and programmatic priorities.
  • Lead and develop a large team of safety professionals and technicians, promoting field presence, customer service, responsiveness, and continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate major projects, staff coverage, and workload across IST and other functional areas to maintain effective ESH support with minimal disruption.
  • Lead incident response, investigations, and corrective action communication, while mentoring staff and supporting AI, RI, RRP, and worker development and compliance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top-Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Master's degree in science, engineering, ESH, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Extensive experience in ESH program management and Human Performance concepts and/or related performance improvement methodologies in a highly technical organization focusing on diverse, cutting-edge experimental science.
  • Extensive leadership experience requiring interactions with senior management and both internal and external regulatory organizations.
  • Experience leading teams, projects, or groups and mentoring others.
  • Expert knowledge in two or more ESH discipline areas: Radiation Protection, Industrial Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Work Planning and Control and Environmental Protection.
  • Ability to use independent judgment with advanced analytical, technical, and organizational decision making and problem-solving skills in order to safely and compliantly accomplish directorate objectives.
  • Understanding of managing budgets and resource allocation.
  • Extensive experience organizing and effectively coordinating multiple and frequently conflicting, concurrent tasks with attention to detail, accuracy, and follow through.
  • Expert verbal and written communication skills as well as interpersonal skills to interact tactfully and effectively with a diverse group of personalities and disciplines, with management at all levels and in presentations to large and diverse audiences at both the management and technical level, e.g., Principal Associate Directorate senior management, Department ofEnergy (DOE) Livermore Site Office, DOE-HQ and other state and government agencies on E&H assurance activities.

Qualifications We Desire
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant DOE Orders and LLNS requirements and experience in an ESH management role at LLNL or other DOE facility.
  • Experience leading teams of safety professionals, including retention and performance/career management.
  • Experience with high-consequence project planning and execution in nuclear facilities
  • Professional certification in one or more ESH-related fields (CHP, CIH, CSP, etc.).
  • Familiarity with SD programs, matrix structure, missions, and operations.

Pay Range

$240,960 - $305,544 Annually

An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.
