Job Summary

The Manager Sterile Processing (SPD) will manage sterile processing personnel during specified shifts, facilitating staff and departmental efficiencies while monitoring the daily operations of the department to ensure that appropriate quality and productivity levels are achieved. Ensures compliance with infection control policies and AAMI, AORN, and Joint Commission standards. Acts as a liaison between the OR and SPD, facilitating all instrumentation being ready on time, supporting all customers of the department. Assures compliance with infection control and sterilization standards, ensuring that sterilization practices and all equipment used for decontamination and sterilization meet quality standards. Assists staff with performance improvement. Additional responsibilities include staff selection, orientation/onboarding, performance evaluation, counseling, and staff development.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Accountable for all aspects of Sterile Processing operations and customer service. Developing goals, targets and action plans.
  • Schedules and manages the work of assigned staff to ensure smooth workflow in the department.
  • Coordinates and maintains workflow and operations in decontamination, the inspection of instruments/trays, cleaning, assembling and packaging of surgical instruments, medical/surgical materials and equipment.
  • Facilitates timely ordering of instrumentation and supplies. Oversees inventory of supplies, equipment. Coordinates procurement and stocking activities. Analyzes usage patterns of supplies and recommends optimal par levels.
  • Provides management with information for forecasting future instrumentation/equipment needs. Tracks and documents lost or damaged equipment and supplies.
  • Identifies opportunities for cost reduction and expense control. Accountable for expenses and budgets.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve work processes and enable achievement of goals in quality, productivity and customer satisfaction.
  • Provides a forum for staff involvement in problem identification and resolutions.
  • Develops and implements solutions to address opportunities to improve quality, safety, efficiency and productivity.
  • Acts as a resource and mentor to staff in matters of department processes, technical skills, equipment, supplies and/or regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures new hires receive orientation and training, and that all staff have the resources, tools and ongoing training necessary to fulfill their duties.
  • In partnership with leadership and Human Resources, makes decisions or recommendations related to performance management, hiring, transfers, corrective actions, terminations, etc. Resolves staff issues and grievances in a fair, timely and consistent manner, also in partnership with HR.
  • Promotes ongoing communications and positive collaborative relationships with physicians, staff and ancillary departments. Participates in hospital teams in order to share information, problem solve, and evaluate the impact of services to receiving departments.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Education/Experience Requirements

REQUIRED:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent Sterile Processing leadership experience.
  • Three years SPD management experience.
  • One year of supervisory experience.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and manage a large workload within tight deadlines.
  • Ability to lead, guide and motivate others.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

PREFERRED:
  • Five years SPD management experience.


Licensure/Certification Requirements

REQUIRED:
  • Current certification as a Sterile Processing Technician through an accredited organization (CRCST- Certified Registered Central Service Tech, IAHCSMM, or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician CBSPD).
