Summary:

The Statistician will provide advanced statistical, analytical, and scientific support to the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) surveillance, epidemiologic, and research activities. The Statistician will collaborate with CDC scientists, epidemiologists, clinicians, awardees, and external partners to design, analyze, validate, and disseminate findings from public health research and surveillance projects focused on birth defects, developmental disabilities, maternal and child health, and related conditions. The Statistician will serve as both a lead and validation analyst on complex public health studies, supporting all phases of the research lifecycle, including study design, analytic plan development, data management, statistical programming, data analysis, interpretation of results, scientific dissemination, and peer-reviewed publication.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform complex and advanced statistical analyses of longitudinal surveillance and research data, prepare reports, manuscripts, briefing materials, etc., of surveillance and research results for publications, using SAS, R, or other open-source language.
  • Perform data pulls and analysis as requested.
  • Develop and implement specific study design elements including statistical aspects such as power and sample size calculations, data management and data analyses plans, and development of study procedures for surveillance data collection and case ascertainment; indicate best recommendations among different sampling plans, surveillance data sources, and cost/time investments.
  • Provide information to DBDID subject-matter experts on the development or modification of surveillance and research protocols, as needed, and analysis of surveillance systems.
Qualifications

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated expertise in applying a broad range of statistical and biostatistical methods to public health research, surveillance, and evaluation activities. Ability to select, implement, and interpret appropriate analytical approaches based on study design, data structure, and research objectives.
  • Advanced proficiency in SAS and R for data preparation, validation, management, analysis, and automation of reproducible workflows. Skilled in developing analysis-ready datasets, data documentation, quality-control procedures, and efficient programming solutions for complex datasets.
  • Knowledge of epidemiologic principles, surveillance systems, and population-based research methodologies. Experience supporting public health studies, longitudinal databases, registries, and scientific investigations that inform programmatic and policy decisions.
  • Ability to communicate complex statistical concepts and findings to technical and non-technical audiences through manuscripts, presentations, reports, briefings, and peer-reviewed publications. Skilled in translating analytical results into actionable public health insights.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including statisticians, epidemiologists, clinicians, researchers, and public health partners. Provides expert consultation on study design, analytic strategies, interpretation of findings, and methodological best practices.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Data Science, Mathematics, Public Health, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Minimum five years of experience conducting statistical analyses in public health, epidemiology, healthcare research, or surveillance environments.
  • Advanced proficiency in SAS and R programming.
  • Experience managing and analyzing large, complex clinical, surveillance, or population-based datasets.
  • Demonstrated experience developing statistical analysis plans and conducting multivariable analyses.
  • Experience supporting scientific publications, technical reports, and research dissemination activities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting CDC, HHS, NIH, or other federal public health agencies.
  • Experience working with NCBDDD surveillance systems, birth defects surveillance, developmental disabilities research, maternal and child health data, or longitudinal cohort studies.
  • Experience conducting survey analyses and complex sampling methodologies.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or R Shiny.
  • Experience serving as a validation statistician or independent reviewer of statistical analyses.

 

Pay and Benefits

The annual salary for this position is $115,000 to $130,000.
