About The RoleThe System Controls Innovation team, part of the Office of the CTO, prototypes and delivers next-generation system-level product solutions for Enphase products. The team is a fast-moving group of firmware and software engineers focused on end-to-end system integration, validation, and product innovation - working closely with multi-disciplinary teams across the organization.
As a member of the System Controls Innovation team, you will solve some of the most exciting problems in the distributed energy space - designing and validating the firmware that drives our next-gen products from prototype through production.
We are seeking a
Staff Firmware Engineer to develop, integrate, and validate system-level firmware for next-gen products and improve current designs through hands-on prototyping and end-to-end system testing.
What You Will Do- Design, implement, and ship firmware features, primarily in Modern C++, for real-time embedded systems
- Develop and integrate system-level firmware across complex embedded platforms with multiple processors/controllers
- Drive end-to-end system testing and validation - from unit tests and software simulations through hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and prototype testing
- Optimize firmware solutions through co-design with hardware teams, ensuring system-level performance and reliability
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate, test, and troubleshoot prototype and production designs
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to engineering best practices
Who You Are and What You Bring- BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline
- BS and 8+ years / MS and 6+ years / PhD and 3+ years' experience in a similar (non-academic) role as an embedded software or firmware engineer
- Expert-level C++ and software fundamentals, including algorithm development, objected oriented design, code modularity, maintainability, and data structures proficiency
- Significant experience with real-time operating systems and multithreaded firmware development
- Expertise in both bare-metal and Zephyr RTOS environments
- Familiarity with ARM Cortex-M0/M4/M7 controllers and multi-core architecture
- Proven ability to troubleshoot firmware-related issues within complex, multi-controller systems and drive solutions
- Experience with end-to-end system testing - including unit tests, HIL testing, and validation with external test equipment such as oscilloscopes, protocol analyzers, etc.
- Knowledge of microcontroller peripherals such as ADC, GPIO, PWM, UART, I2C, and SPI
- Familiarity with development tools such as Docker, GCC, GDB, VS Code, GNU Make, CMake, etc.
- Experience with Git version control
- Ability to take ownership of development tasks and drive them to completion with high quality to support team success
Additional DesiredSkills- Experience with system-level integration and validation across firmware, hardware, and software boundaries
- Experience adopting AI-assisted development tools and workflows, including LLM-integrated coding environments
- Experience with industrial communications protocols such as Controller Area Network (CAN/CANFD), Ethernet, Modbus TCP/RTU, MQTT, IEC61850, etc.
- Familiarity with CAN sniffers, AC grid simulators and programmable loads
- Familiarity with ARM Cortex-A53/A55 processors Embedded Yocto/Linux development
- Familiarity with Python and scripting languages for test automation and data analysis
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and containerized build environments using tools such as Docker, Bitbucket Pipelines, or GitHub Actions
Travel- Occasional travel domestically
Work locationCandidates must be authorized to work in the US.
The base pay range for this position is $110,000 to $151,000. This salary range may be modified in the future. The successful candidate's starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, education or training, work location, and market conditions. This position is also eligible for bonus, equity, and benefits.
