About the team and the role:TCGplayer, an eBay company, powers a marketplace for buyers, sellers, hobby shops, and collectors across the trading card community. For many people, TCGplayer is more than a marketplace. It is part of how they discover, enjoy, and stay connected to the hobby they love! The Data Engineering team helps make that experience possible by building the systems, standards, and partnerships that make data easier to trust, easier to work with, and easier to scale across TCGplayer Technology.
As a Staff Data Engineer, you will join our Data Engineering team and server as a technical leader, helping shape technical direction across warehouse and application-facing systems. You will work closely with engineering, platform, and analytics teams to strengthen data governance, improve confidence in data-related changes across distributed environments, and guide sound decisions around datastores, data movement, and system design. This is a highly collaborative Staff Data Engineer role with broad influence across TCGplayer, with the opportunity to raise engineering standards, support long-term platform health, and help teams build with greater clarity and confidence.
What you will accomplish:- Serve as a technical leader in data systems, setting direction and raising the bar for engineers through architecture guidance, standards, and hands-on partnership across TCGplayer Technology.
- Strengthen Snowflake governance, access controls, security, observability, and cost management so warehouse workloads are more reliable, efficient, and easier to scale.
- Improve how teams validate and test data-related changes across distributed environments, increasing release confidence in systems that span warehouse, services, and application-facing platforms.
- Guide datastore and architecture decisions across operational and warehouse systems, helping teams make strong tradeoff decisions based on reliability, scale, maintainability, and product needs.
- Lead cross-application datastore initiatives, including migrations and platform upgrades, with emphasis on security, governance, and alignment with architecture standards.
- Partner with application and platform teams to bring greater clarity to data ownership, service boundaries, and data movement across transactional products, microservices, and event-driven systems.
- Enable teams to move faster by providing guidance on Postgres design, performance, and datastore decisions, increasing consistency and engineering leverage across the organization.
What you will bring:- 10+ years of experience designing, improving, or supporting production platforms across data warehousing, operational datastores, distributed systems, or data architecture.
- Hands-on experience with Snowflake in production environments, including governance, access controls, security, observability, performance, reliability, and cost management.
- Strong experience with relational databases, ideally Postgres, including schema design, indexing, query optimization, transactions, scaling, and production troubleshooting.
- Experience guiding datastore and architecture decisions across technologies such as Postgres, MongoDB, Redis, Snowflake, and similar platforms.
- Experience with microservices and event-driven systems (Kafka and Debezium preferred), including retries, idempotency, ordering, and change data capture.
- Strong communication and technical judgment, with a track record of influencing across teams and improving reliability, testing, governance, observability, or engineering practices in complex environments.
