Summary

The DWC Accountant - Staff manages the day-to-day G/L accounting responsibilities of the organization to ensure the books are closed accurately and on time at the end of each month. The ideal candidate is flexible and has a keen eye for detail; they are accurate, consistent, and have previous experience with QuickBooks accounting software, as well as a solid understanding of accounts payable and accounts receivable.

Essential Functions
  • Maintain the general ledger by verifying, allocating, and posting transactions.
  • Maintain and balance subsidiary accounts by verifying, allocating, posting, and reconciling transactions and resolving discrepancies.
  • Identify and review revenue requirements before posting private funds to general ledger to ensure accuracy.
  • Review, analyze, and verify various accounting transactions, including undeposited funds, prepaid expenses, and payroll clearing.
  • Create functional timesheets.
  • Maintain fixed asset schedule and prepare depreciation/amortization entries.
  • Manage current liabilities, including sales tax payable, security deposits, deferred income, accrued expenses, and payroll liabilities.
  • Perform bank reconciliations on eight (8) accounts.
  • Participate as a member of the team in the month-end close to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
  • Prepare and enter all non-grant Accounts Receivable; maintain AR aging, and update collection status to Accounting Manager.
  • Summarize financial status by collecting information and preparing balance sheets, profit and loss, and other statements.
  • Post DWC tenant rent deposits into general ledger accounting software on a monthly basis.
  • Assist with accounting, reconciliation, and cash needs of nonprofit-run retail business.
  • Assist with the annual audit and preparation of tax filings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Downtown Women's Center operates several program and administrative locations in the Skid Row neighborhood of Downtown Los Angeles. The organization's primary hub is located on San Pedro Street (SP) and includes participant-facing services, staff and departmental offices, and Permanent Supportive Housing units.

Programs at the SP site include the Day Center, Women's Health Clinic, kitchen and meal services, Trauma Recovery Center, supportive service offices, and housing units, among other operations.

Although some positions may have a primary work location at another DWC program site or within the community, employees in all roles may be expected to attend trainings, meetings, or other work-related activities at the San Pedro (SP) location. Parking near the San Pedro (SP) Access Center is limited, and employees should plan for offsite parking with a short walk to the site.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. This position would also require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, exempt position. Office hours are 9:00 am to 5:30 pm with the flexibility to work evenings and weekends when necessary

Required Education, Experience, and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree with major coursework in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field required, though the equivalent experience may be substituted for degree.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience needed; nonprofit accounting experience preferred.
  • Ability to apply DWC accounting policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of accrual-based accounting and basic accounting debts and credits.
  • Knowledge of private foundations and government grants preferred.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of QuickBooks (or similar accounting software) required.
  • 10-key data entry.
  • Detail-oriented, thorough, accurate, and highly organized.
  • Skill in communicating relevant financial information to management and other staff.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Professional attitude; team- and service-oriented, friendly, and positive.
  • Cultural humility.
  • Must be a CA resident and live no more than 80 miles from DWC; must be available for in-person meetings at DWC.
  • Must provide documentation of a negative TB test result within the last twelve months, on first day of hire.


Pay Range

$75,504 - $85,000/yearly
