This role is part of Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE), supporting Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. The team fosters innovation and drives engineering workflows of the future, shared solutions and standards, simplicity and lower costs, and manufacturable design.

As part of a small, passionate team of experts, you will be responsible for organizing and executing plans to characterize material samples using a variety of laboratory tests and equipment. In this hands-on position, you'll work with engineers, scientists, and other technicians to validate the materials and processes used to build rocket engines. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight. Responsibilities:
  • Perform laboratory analyses, including tensile testing, hardness testing, metallographic preparation, and microstructural evaluation, per requests provided by internal customers
  • Analyze, document, and communicate results to stakeholders
  • Demonstrate strict attention to detail in executing laboratory analyses
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and facilities
  • Safely work with hazardous systems containing chemicals, heat, and/or high pressure


Must be physically able to:
  • Work with and around chemicals and other hazardous materials
  • Wear appropriate PPE when needed


Qualifications:
  • 4+ years' experience in analytical/characterization/testing laboratory environment required for Senior
  • Hands-on experience executing test plans
  • Basic engineering laboratory skills: weights and measures, calculations, chemical hygiene, materials safety planning, personal protective equipment, contamination control, job hazard analysis, and work instruction
  • Strong written and personal computer skills
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.


Desired:
  • Experience using equipment used for a variety of techniques (specimen preparation, optical microscopy, microhardness testing, mechanical testing, etc.). Certifications are a plus, but not required.
  • Familiarity with typical aerospace testing and quality processes (AS9100, FOD Control, Lean, 5S, etc.)
  • Experience in forensic analysis of materials via SEM, FT-IR, etc.
  • Knowledge of the types of materials and processes used to fabricate aerospace components
  • Ability to operate manual machine tools (saws, mills, etc.)
