Providing technical expertise in handling and directing high valued, complex Workers’ Compensation (WC) claims involving serious injuries, catastrophic losses and/or complicated litigation. Includes reserving, negotiating, strategizing, litigating and final disposition of assigned claims.
- Manage indemnity, medical and legal aspects of highest valued, complex WC claims, for Virginia (VA), Minnesota (MN) and other jurisdictions, through use of various resources available (i.e., utilizing medical management services in controlling medical treatment as necessary, coordinating independent medical evaluations where appropriate). Pursue alternate/transitional early return to work to reduce indemnity and medical costs. Document file activity on a timely basis and accurately details significant events and outstanding issues. Engage tools and resources included in litigation management program, where applicable. Provide approval for all benefits (indemnity, medical, legal/allocated) within authority levels and is responsible for timely issuance in compliance with statutory requirements and best claim practices.
- Evaluate claim exposure on assigned files proficiently with independence to establish appropriate reserves within assigned authority. Continually evaluate reserves during life of the claim to ensure accuracy of financial exposure on more complex claims. Identify and refer claims evaluated greater than delegated authority to management for guidance and direction. Convey claim facts, issues and proposed actions proficiently in claim committee forum.
- Develop resolution strategy plans (action plans) and continually assesses and updates to achieve appropriate claim results and timely closure. Conduct claimant negotiations to achieve claim settlements within authority limits; interacts with claimant and/or claimant’s attorney as needed to direct negotiations and achieve settlement. May assist other teams with claim reserving, resolution and/or negotiation strategy.
What you will need to succeed
- Minimum 8 years Workers’ Compensation claim handling experience including VA claims and other jurisdictions. State adjuster’s licenses are preferred but not required.
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university preferred.
- Technical claim handling and organizational skills
- Strong (oral/written) communication and interpersonal skills
