Sr Systems Administrator Train Control Information Systems

Salary Range: $104,319.50-$123,077.00

Minimum Knowledge and Experience:
  • Must have a BS Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a similar technical related field and minimum 8 years of related Windows and/or Unix or Linux Systems Administration experience OR possess 15 years of equivalent experience in lieu of a degree
  • 5+ years administering Linux based systems assuring configuration control and automation where possible including sub-systems, patching, packaging, performance tuning, networking, user management, and security.
  • 5+ years experience administering VMware EXSI or Proxmox Clusters
  • 5+ years experience administering mass storage solutions such as TrueNAS and NetApp
  • 5+ years experience setting up SANs with iSCSI
  • Strong background and experience troubleshooting, debugging applications, and performing root cause analysis of system failures.
  • Must be able to work under pressure in restoring high priority systems back to operations
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and troubleshoot problems with speed and efficiency
  • Self-directed, able to multi-task and prioritize work
  • Excellent analytical problem-solving skills with respect to a variety of technical problems from basic to highly complex scope on a variety of equipment, (e.g. desktop PCs, workstations, servers, switches, storage, and other specialized computer systems).
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines while simultaneously managing multiple projects.
  • Excellent communication (oral, written, presentation), interpersonal and consultative skills.

Additional Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
  • Experience with Enterprise Infrastructure in a railroad environment, specifically related to signals, communications and train control systems, PTC.
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux or other *nix certification.
  • Hand On experience diagnosing network related issues
  • Ability to navigate, debug, and modify programs in high level programming languages
  • Ability to write PERL, python, and shell scripts
  • Experience with administering database systems (e.g. SQL, Oracle).
  • Experience with inter-application messaging systems (e.g. JBOS, MQ)

Key Accountabilities (Essential Job Duties):
  • Demonstrates understanding and adheres to the KCS principles of Employee Engagement, Operational Excellence, Safety & Security, and Economic Performance.
  • Administer and maintain systems responsible for dispatching and train control, ensuring continuous availability and high reliability.
  • Develop, refine, implement, and maintain technical and operational documentation, (policies, procedures, and standards), to meet compliance responsibilities.
  • Documentation of all systems for disaster recovery, integrity and repeatability, and cross training purposes.
  • Prepare change requests and make modifications to systems consistent with corporate change management processes.
  • Ensure system security, make vulnerability assessments, and take necessary steps to mitigate risks.
  • Monitor systems, and network / messaging traffic logs for unusual activity, and make recommendations or act based on those findings.
  • Administer testing and evaluation of system patches and updates in test environments prior to deployment on production computers and equipment.
  • Manage direct subordinate personnel charged with similar duties.
  • Lead groups in gathering information for performing root cause analysis of system failures.
  • Participate in designing system infrastructure, solutions and applications.
  • Work with teams to resolve issues that are uncovered or occur during day-to-day operations.
  • Interface regularly with staff from other departments, communicating system issues and responding to requests for assistance and information.
  • Be on call to manage and/or troubleshoot system problems to address above responsibilities.

  • Must be available to respond to emergency calls 24/7
