Full Job Description
Responsibilities

Description

The Enterprise Infrastructure team is seeking a Senior Systems Administrator for its Windows Systems Administration function.  This role has primary responsibility for a large, complex Windows Server environment and Active Directory infrastructure spanning multiple largely independent on-premises domains and forests.  The broader team supports Windows, Linux, virtualization, storage, backup, DNS, monitoring, and related infrastructure across on-premises and public cloud environments.

The role combines Windows Server administration, advanced troubleshooting, PowerShell automation, monitoring, lifecycle management, and technical leadership.  It works closely with the virtualization, storage, backup, and other infrastructure functions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Windows operations: Administration and engineering of a large Windows Server environment across physical, virtual, on-premises, and public cloud platforms
  • Design and implementation: Requirements analysis, system design, build planning, and implementation planning with internal customers
  • Active Directory: Administration and improvement of AD DS across multiple domains and forests, including domain controllers, replication, Group Policy, authentication, DNS dependencies, trusts, and directory health
  • Server lifecycle: Provisioning, configuration, patching, upgrades, and retirement of Windows Servers with minimal downtime, standardized builds, and automation wherever practical
  • Troubleshooting: Complex infrastructure investigations, root-cause analysis, solution documentation, and maintenance of technical standards and operational procedures
  • Escalations and reliability: Senior escalation support for Windows infrastructure; improvements to security, reliability, recoverability, performance, and supportability
  • Monitoring: Monitoring, alerting, and health validation for Windows systems and services; operational analysis to identify risks and prevent service impact
  • Security: Windows Server configuration standards, vulnerability remediation, access controls, certificate management, and secure administrative practices
  • VMware: Deployment, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Windows virtual machines in vSphere; assistance with VMware platform work as needed
  • Automation: PowerShell modules, scripts, and workflows for provisioning, configuration, patching, health validation, reporting, and remediation
  • Modernization: Improvement of on-premises platforms; migration of appropriate workloads to cloud services and automated deployment models
  • Storage and recovery: Protection requirements, Windows-side dependency troubleshooting, and recovery validation for critical systems and services
  • On-call support: Required participation in a 24x7 rotation and scheduled after-hours maintenance as needed

Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • Degree in Computer Science, IT, Information Systems, or a related field preferred; equivalent professional experience accepted
  • Current Microsoft, VMware, cloud, automation, or infrastructure certifications preferred, but not required

Experience

  • Five or more years of progressively responsible systems administration or systems engineering experience, including substantial support of large, complex enterprise server environments

Technical Requirements

Core requirements are deep Windows Server, Active Directory, troubleshooting, and PowerShell experience.  Experience with VMware, storage, backup, monitoring, Linux, networking, and cloud platforms is valuable but secondary.

  • Windows Server: Strong experience with Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025; support and modernization of legacy 2008 and 2012 systems; standardized builds, patching, upgrades, troubleshooting, performance analysis, clustering, file services, recovery, and retirement
  • Active Directory: Strong AD DS experience across multiple domains and forests with limited trust relationships; Group Policy, DNS integration, LDAP, authentication, and related identity infrastructure
  • PowerShell: Advanced proficiency with reusable functions and modules, remoting, structured error handling, logging, data processing, and API or management-platform integration
  • VMware: Solid vSphere experience deploying, supporting, and troubleshooting Windows VMs; broader ESXi, vCenter Server, clustering, capacity, upgrades, and platform monitoring strongly preferred
  • Networking: Working knowledge of routing, switching, firewalls, and load balancers such as F5
  • Storage and backup: Windows integration with enterprise storage and backup platforms; volume and filesystem configuration, capacity troubleshooting, snapshot and backup coordination, and restore validation
  • Microsoft 365 and Entra ID: Windows infrastructure integration with Microsoft Entra ID and related Microsoft 365 services preferred; Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Teams, and Intune familiarity useful
  • Linux: Basic administration skills, preferably with Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • Monitoring: Experience with platforms such as New Relic or Zabbix
  • ITSM: Enterprise ticketing and change management experience with ServiceNow, Remedy, or similar systems
  • Cloud platforms: Azure or AWS experience preferred
