Job Summary

This position is part of the Geotechnical Specialists Team and is responsible for leading and executing seismic reprocessing projects with specialist vendors in support of Murphy's global exploration portfolio. The Senior Staff Geophysicist will have a proven track record of seismic processing across a variety of global basins and petroleum systems, with expertise in the deepwater Gulf of America. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership and quality control for both operated and non-operated seismic processing projects, working closely with asset teams and processing contractors from project scoping through execution. The role is responsible for delivering high-quality seismic products on schedule while ensuring the incorporation of best-in-class processing technologies.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with conventional seismic processing workflows as well as modern FDR/FWIR Full Waveform Imaging Reflectivity techniques for both streamer and ocean-bottom node (OBN) datasets in complex salt environments. Experience with 4D seismic processing and Elastic FWIR is required. Experience with seismic inversion and AVO analysis is highly desirable as part of the broader exploration workflow. Candidates should have a working knowledge of software packages such as Hampson-Russell, RokDoc, or DUG Insight for AVO and rock physics analysis.

A broader understanding of the exploration workflow, including seismic interpretation, structural and stratigraphic mapping, lead identification, prospect evaluation, and prospect maturation, is also advantageous.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter with a collaborative, team-first mindset who is comfortable managing multiple concurrent seismic processing projects in a fast-paced exploration environment. Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively engage with multidisciplinary teams and external vendors are essential.

This position is based in Murphy's Houston corporate office and offers a hybrid work schedule, with the opportunity to work remotely up to two days per week.

  • Minimum 15 years' experience in offshore exploration & development seismic processing working deepwater GoA or international projects and minimum 10 years' experience with an offshore E&P operator
  • Expert understanding of geophysical processing techniques including 4D and modern FDR methods with streamer & OBN data in complex salt environments
  • Proficiency in AVO analysis and seismic acquisition techniques
  • Proficiency in AVO platforms such as RokDoc, Hampson-Russell or Insight is beneficial
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills


The individual is required to follow all applicable safety precautions. Work is performed almost entirely in a controlled (i.e., inside) environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardous/extreme elements; some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office for various needs.
