Full Job Description
Position Summary:
The Senior Staff Accountant will play a key role in Coterie's Finance team, supporting accurate and timely financial reporting while owning critical components of the accounting close process. This role will be responsible for general ledger accounting, reconciliations, financial analysis, and audit support while partnering across the organization to maintain strong financial controls and scalable accounting processes. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, and comfortable taking ownership in a fast-paced, growing organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own key components of the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, including preparation and review of journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Maintain general ledger accuracy and ensure transactions are properly recorded in accordance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
  • Prepare balance sheet reconciliations and investigate and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Support preparation of monthly financial statements, management reporting, and financial analysis.
  • Assist with accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, and other accounting activities as needed.
  • Partner with Finance and business teams to research accounting matters, resolve issues, and ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Support external audits by preparing schedules, documentation, and responses to auditor requests.
  • Assist with the development, documentation, and maintenance of accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Identify opportunities to improve, automate, and scale accounting processes as the organization grows.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis in partnership with Finance leadership.
  • Assist with insurance-related accounting activities and reconciliations, including transactions involving agency operations, carrier partners, commissions, premiums, or other insurance-related financial activity.
  • Support special projects and other Finance initiatives as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 6+ years of progressive accounting experience, including experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and financial close processes.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and fundamental accounting principles.
  • Experience preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, financial schedules, and supporting documentation.
  • Experience working directly with external auditors and supporting financial statement audits.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience working with accounting or ERP systems.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across departments.

Preferred Qualifications (Bonus Experience):

  • CPA or progress toward CPA certification.
  • Experience within insurance, insurtech, an insurance agency/MGA, or financial services.
  • Experience with insurance agency accounting, including premium, commission, carrier, or producer-related accounting.
  • Experience with Sage Intacct or similar ERP/accounting platforms.
  • Experience in a high-growth, venture-backed, or rapidly scaling organization.
  • Exposure to public-company readiness, SOX/internal controls, or PCAOB audit environments.


Our Interview Process:

Our hiring process generally consists of 4 phases. The goal is to provide an opportunity for us to learn more about our candidates while allowing them to get to know us as well!

  • Phase 1: Qualified candidates will first meet with a member of our People Operations team for a phone interview. This discussion is a high-level conversation to understand more about your background and interests and for us to share more about Coterie and the position.
  • Phase 2: Selected candidates will be invited to meet with our Hiring Manager for a 2nd interview via Teams video. This interview is designed to be more detail oriented and allows you to learn more about the role and expected to be 30 minutes in length.
  • Phase 3: Top candidates will receive an invite to our project and team interview series. This series will include an experiential exercise project (provided in advance) followed by 1:1 interviews with selected team members. The final series is roughly 1-3 hours in total but can be scheduled over a few days for flexibility.
  • Phase 4: Final candidates will be invited to the final interview. This interview will include 1:1 meeting with a member of our senior leadership team and is expected to be 30 minutes in length.

  • Annual salary estimated between $95,000-$110,000 based on national data. Candidates who meet all the minimum requirements and possess additional relevant experience, as outlined in the job description, may be considered for a salary above the midpoint of the above range. Salary is based on internal equity; internal salary ranges; market data/ranges; applicant's skills; prior relevant experience; degrees or certifications, etc.
