Full Job Description
We are looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer (Sr. SDE) to join our Knowledge Work Automation team within Applied AI. You will be at the bleeding edge of AI innovation-designing, building, and shipping multi-agentic systems, purpose-built AI agents, and reusable primitives that power cross-functional productivity workflows at Amazon scale. You will work at the intersection of large language models, multi-agent systems, and production-grade distributed software to transform how knowledge workers operate across the organization.

In this role, you will architect and deliver agentic AI systems that move from rapid prototype to production-grade software serving thousands of internal customers. You will push the boundaries of Generative AI, agent orchestration, and tool-augmented reasoning to automate complex knowledge work-from backlog execution to technical debt reduction to cross-functional coordination. If you thrive on ambiguity, love shipping fast while maintaining high quality, and want to shape the future of AI-powered productivity, we invite you to become a valued member of our team.

Key job responsibilities

- **Architect & build agentic AI systems** - Design and deliver multi-agent systems that autonomously execute complex knowledge work workflows, moving from prototype to production-grade at Amazon scale.

- **Innovate at the frontier of AI** - Evaluate and adopt emerging LLM techniques, agent orchestration patterns, and tool-augmented reasoning frameworks; keep pace with rapid advances in the Generative AI landscape.

- **Ship reusable primitives** - Build platform-level components (APIs, agent templates, orchestration layers) that are consumed across teams and accelerate the broader AI for Me program.

- **Own end-to-end delivery** - Drive projects from ambiguous problem statements through design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operational excellence with minimal guidance.

- **Work cross-functionally** - Collaborate closely with Applied Scientists, Product Managers, Technical Program Managers, Solution Architects, and partner engineering teams to define requirements, shape architecture, and deliver integrated solutions.

- **Raise the technical bar** - Establish and enforce high development standards; lead code reviews, design discussions, and system design reviews. Mentor junior engineers and foster a culture of engineering excellence.

- **Drive operational rigor** - Build well-instrumented, secure, testable, and maintainable systems. Own operational health, remove blockers, and continuously improve team processes.

- **Leverage a broad tech stack** - Work across Python, TypeScript, container-based development, AWS services (Lambda, Step Functions, Bedrock, SageMaker), LLM frameworks (LangChain, LangGraph, or equivalent), vector databases, and modern AI/ML tooling.

About the team

The Sonder Team is Applied AI's Knowledge Work Automation team. We build and ship purpose-built AI agents and reusable primitives for cross-functional productivity workflows, serving as the proving ground and accelerator for the broader AI for Me program.

We push the boundaries of Generative AI, agent orchestration, and tool-augmented reasoning to automate complex knowledge work - SDLC or otherwise. What we build here sets the blueprint for AI-powered productivity across Amazon.

We value builders who ship fast, learn continuously, and aren't afraid to work in uncharted territory. You'll work alongside talented engineers and cross-discipline talent in an environment where rapid experimentation and production-grade quality coexist.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- 7+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience

- - Experience building LLM-powered applications, multi-agent systems, or AI/ML production pipelines

- - Experience with AI/ML frameworks and tools (e.g., LangChain, LangGraph, Amazon Bedrock, SageMaker, vector databases, RAG architectures)

- - Experience designing APIs and platform primitives consumed by other engineering teams

- - Track record of mentoring engineers and raising the technical bar on a team

- - Strong ability to operate in ambiguous, fast-moving problem spaces and make pragmatic trade-offs

- - Experience with event-driven architectures, workflow orchestration (Step Functions, Temporal, or equivalent), and container-based development

- - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience

- - Publications, patents, or demonstrable contributions in AI/ML or distributed systems
