Overview

We are seeking a motivated Sr. Radiological Characterization Engineer to contribute to our mission supporting our work at Savannah River in Aiken, SC.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Specific duties include, but are not limited to: 

  • Evaluate potential impacts of regulatory changes on research and development and operations processes and providing recommendations to management; 
  • Define the requirements for radioactive disposal management programs, procedures, and training and qualification requirements; 
  • Provide technical expertise for the disposal of all types (i.e., LLW, TRU Waste, and radioactive portion of PCB waste, Nano waste, Mixed Waste, and Mixed TRU Waste); 
  • Develop radiological characterization plans for unique waste and waste streams (including calculations, sampling and analysis plans, certification or characterization plans, and work packages for processes and research and development initiatives);
  • Analyze construction and special project plans for the creation of new waste streams; 
  • Perform periodic waste stream validations;
  • The job function includes maintaining external associations such as technical committees, professional societies, and licenses to remain current with waste management and other industry best practices;
  • Support programmatic and/or facility continuous improvement initiatives. Responsibilities include pursuing implementation of Pollution Prevention / Waste Minimization objectives;
  • Attend plan-of-the-day, plan-of-week, and project meetings as necessary to maintain awareness of facility activities;
  • Lead others in solving complex scientific and/or technical problems; uses sophisticated analytical thought to exercise judgement and identify innovative solutions;
  • May lead job family/cross-job family teams or projects with moderate resource requirements, risk, and or complexity;
  • Communicate difficult concepts and negotiating with others to adopt a different point of view;
  • Perform radioactive waste characterization and calculations;
  • Serving as the Waste Cognizant Technical Function for projects;
  • Support waste management engineering activities and ensure compliance with regulations; and
  • Conduct site walk-downs to assess waste characterization and management needs.
Education and Licensure
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Nuclear Engineering or related discipline. (required)
Skills, Experience and Qualifications
  • Minimum of 10 years of waste management/engineering experience. (required)
  • At least 6 years of experience specifically as a Rad Waste Characterization Engineer (Waste Cognizant Technical Function).
  • Candidates must demonstrate significant experience performing radioactive waste calculations and possess a strong background in waste management/engineering.
  • Requires specialized depth and/or breadth of expertise in primary job family or field of specialization.
  • Requires specialized depth and/or breadth of expertise in science and/or engineering; has a wide range of experience in acumen serving as an advisor to management.
  • Ability to walk down field or facility sites as required.
  • Due to federal contract security requirements, this position requires U.S. Citizenship. 
  • Due to federal contract security requirements, candidates must be able to successfully pass a federal background investigation to secure and maintain DOE Q security clearance.
