Full Job Description
About the team and the role:

The mission of the Developer Ecosystem team is to be the platform of choice for global commerce powered by a best-in-class public API portfolio and a world-class developer experience. APIs are the foundation of modern technology companies. This role is vital to developing eBay's external developer platform, which supports over $25B in Gross Merchandise Sold and $3B in Gross Merchandise Bought every year. We support all public APIs and work alongside external developers, partners, and internal teams.

Our team is part of the Global Technology organization at eBay and reports to the Chief Technology Officer. We build some APIs ourselves and assist other teams in their API development. We provide governance and oversight of all public interfaces. We create all API documentation and deliver technical support to external developers. We also develop various tools, frameworks, and technologies to support the ecosystem.

We are hiring an experienced Sr Product Manager (2) to help specify, prioritize, and lead various API product development projects across our team. This important leadership role will work with many groups within eBay and key external customers through technical support, events, conferences, and advisory councils. You will personally lead several high-profile API projects, from collaborating with our program management and engineering teams on multiple products to supporting major company-wide development initiatives.

Simply put, we need you to help our team build and deliver magical developer experiences. We are looking for a problem solver who has a strong vision on how to support developers with APIs. You will inspire engineers, set requirements, prioritize features, develop a roadmap, and lead products through the full release life cycle. You must have a deep understanding of our customers' needs, our business, and relevant technologies. Building connections across a complex global enterprise is key. Your efforts will directly affect the strategy, functionality, and quality of eBay's APIs to generate significant revenue.

We are in a phase of renewal and expansion as we advance the modernization of our APIs and enhance the developer ecosystem as a whole. We seek outstanding individuals who share eBay's cultural values and have a passion for delivering APIs that support our mission. If you enjoy challenges and have experience product managing public-facing APIs and / or API heavy product development cycles, we want you on our team!

What you will accomplish:
  • Create a comprehensive vision and strategy for the API-related products you work on; effectively champion a market-informed product strategy that aligns to our eBay corporate strategy.
  • Analyze market trends, draw on user research, and apply data-driven insights to guide API product decisions, support strategic investments, and construct compelling cases.
  • Develop engaging multi-phase product and feature roadmaps, as well as launch plans to achieve clear results for our developers, meet their success targets, and advance eBay's business growth objectives.
  • Understand the entire user journey with a deep focus on developer experience quality. Show dedication to hearing developers and integrating their input into product development.
  • Collaborate with leaders across eBay to align plans with product, design, and technology teams. Work also with analytics, marketing, operations, sales, and strategy functions.
  • Lead the development of multiple public API products and features. Motivate product teams to deliver high-quality, iterative products that delight developers.
  • Foster a culture of ownership and urgency while empowering teams to quickly prioritize and complete tasks. Encourage ongoing improvement by holding regular reviews and integrating insights from internal cross-functional teams.
  • Hold technical discussions and interactions with strategic external development partners while onboarding them to eBay.
  • Break down silos and create connections across teams that will drive efficient collaboration and clear alignment around our public API initiatives.
  • Partner closely with other functions in our team (engineering, program management, support, tech docs) to manage through blockers and communicate dates, breakthroughs, and achievements.
  • Support post-launch initiatives to optimize public API product performance, collect customer feedback, and use this data to drive continuous improvement.
  • Build processes and implement continuous improvement methods to ensure the team can deliver with speed and transparency.
  • Use design and research collaborations to gather insights and feedback during every stage of the product lifecycle for our public APIs.

What you will bring:
  • 6+ years of product management experience in defining a vision and building innovative products that drove significant impact for users.
  • At least 3 years of experience developing public-facing APIs and / or handling API-heavy product development life cycles.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical abilities coupled with a focus on business insights while building compelling cases and roadmaps.
  • Deep expertise in customer-focused product management with a relentless drive to improve the developer experience and consistently set a higher standard for quality.
  • Clear and succinct communicator and skilled storyteller; able to provide summaries while also exploring details when needed.
  • Demonstrated ability in written and verbal communication to convey information from early concepts through complete product launch plans to your team, partners, and executive audiences.
  • A capacity to develop solid connections that aid in influencing and negotiating with others, tackling challenges, and accomplishing tasks throughout the company.
  • A track record of leading complex, multi-stage product development initiatives within a matrixed organization that includes various collaborators, time zones, business areas, and technical platforms.
  • A broad, strong technical foundation with the ability to grasp APIs, platforms, software and hardware engineering, architecture, and systems discussions.
  • Intermediate knowledge of many of the following: GraphQL/REST APIs, OpenAPI specs, Messaging Systems, RDBMS/NoSQL, Containers, Infrastructure layer, etc. Direct experience in GraphQL, OpenAPI, and Contract-first development preferred.
  • Experience evolving product management processes and guidelines; continually improving the product development lifecycle, from planning through deployment.
  • Experience in Agile / Scrum methodologies and using test and validation frameworks throughout the development lifecycle.
  • A data- and dedicated approach to decision making; leverages delivery metrics, benchmarks, and financial targets to track progress and drive accountability.
  • Inspirational and operational people leadership abilities with a history of guiding and assisting other team members.
  • Experience with online marketplaces and eCommerce platforms is preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a technical or business field is required; advanced degree (MBA, MS) is a plus.
