A Day in the Life

The Neuroscience portfolio is dedicated to advancing therapies that improve outcomes for patients living with neurological disorders and conditions. Through innovative technologies and cross-functional collaboration, the team develops solutions that support physicians and healthcare systems in delivering safe, effective, and efficient patient care across a broad range of neuroscience applications.

Within the Neuroscience portfolio, the Cranial & Spinal Technologies (CST) business develops technologies used in spinal, cranial, biologics, and navigation-enabled procedures. The team partners across engineering, quality, manufacturing, clinical, and regulatory functions to design and support products that address complex surgical challenges and help improve patient outcomes worldwide.

This position is based onsite at the designated Medtronic location and requires regular in-person collaboration with engineering and cross-functional teams. Travel of up to 10% may be required to support project activities, supplier engagements, testing, or business needs.

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will provide technical leadership in the design, development, verification, validation, and lifecycle support of mechanical and electromechanical medical device products and systems. This role applies advanced mechanical engineering principles to solve complex technical challenges, improve product performance and reliability, and deliver solutions that meet business, quality, and regulatory requirements while collaborating across cross-functional teams and supporting key technical initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Research, plan, design, develop, verify, and validate mechanical and electromechanical products, components, assemblies, and systems.
  • Apply advanced mechanical engineering principles and methodologies to solve complex product, manufacturing, and system-level technical challenges.
  • Develop and evaluate engineering solutions involving materials, mechanisms, instruments, controls, plastics, metals, and electromechanical assemblies.
  • Perform engineering analyses including tolerance analysis, Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFMA), Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA), and structural or finite element analysis as applicable.
  • Develop and review engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation using applicable drafting standards and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) practices.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support design reviews, risk management activities, verification and validation testing, supplier partnerships, and product improvements.
  • Serve as a technical representative for Mechanical Engineering on project teams and provide technical recommendations, status updates, and risk assessments to stakeholders.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and support the coordination of project activities and technical deliverables.


Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in STEM preference Mechanical Engineering and 4+ years of relevant engineering experience, OR an advanced degree in STEM preference Mechanical Engineering and 2+ years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Experience designing mechanical components and assemblies using 3D modeling and engineering drawing tools.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis, risk analysis, design controls, and design verification and validation processes.
  • Demonstrated experience independently solving complex technical problems and developing engineering recommendations.
  • Experience working with cross-functional engineering, quality, manufacturing, and supplier teams in a regulated product development environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience within the medical device industry and knowledge of FDA Quality System Regulations (QSR), ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 60601, IEC 62304, and applicable international regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with SolidWorks and/or Creo for 3D modeling and product design.
  • Experience designing and developing complex mechanical and electromechanical products, systems, and assemblies.
  • Experience using analysis tools and methodologies including DFMEA, DFMA, tolerance stack-up analysis, and finite element analysis tools such as ANSYS.
  • Six Sigma certification and/or experience leading technical projects, supplier activities, and mentoring other engineers.


For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. a7 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$106,400.00 - $159,600.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
