Job DescriptionPrimary Function of PositionThe da Vinci Single Port (SP) system provides surgeons with robotic-assisted technology designed for deep and narrow access to tissue in the body through a single, small incision. It pushes the frontier of human-machine interaction by fusing many technologies into a core product experience - technologies such as 3D immersive vision, real-time haptic interface and robotic manipulators.
The primary responsibility of the position is to lead the software team responsible for implementing the User Interface and underlying State Machine of the SP system. The UI Manager works collaboratively with a cross-functional team of interaction designers, human factors engineers, clinical engineers, and others to develop embedded software and graphical user interfaces that make customers' experience of using complex surgical devices safe, easy to learn, and confidence-inspiring. The successful candidate is a hands-on technical manager able to drive to solutions from rough requirements and has a commitment to high product quality. A strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward is required.
Essential Job Duties - Recognize and attract top talent, mentor and train existing team members and new hires through one-on-one coaching as well as team wide initiatives.
- Interface with variety of cross functional teams including Interaction Design, Human Factors, Clinical, Controls Engineering, etc., in understanding user interface needs to create, maintain, and track a bottom-up schedule that best supports business unit top-down goals.
- Own full development lifecycle for UI software team and associated documentation (negotiate requirements, systematic risk assessment and mitigation, prototyping, development, testing, and software releases).
- Champion best practices in software development (code reviews, scrums, bug scrubbing meetings, coding conventions, continuous integration, defensive programming, static analysis, design patterns, etc.).
- Conduct technical design reviews.
- Assess and update the software hazard analysis and identify mitigations for hazardous situations.
- Document traceability from software requirements and software hazard analyses to module verification tests and system verification tests.
QualificationsRequired Skills and Experience- Experience recruiting, mentoring, and functionally managing teams of highly skilled engineers.
- Experience in all phases of software development including evaluation, planning and definition, design & implementation, Verification & Validation, Market Launch, and Post Market.
- Experience with concepts of design input, design output, traceability, and risk analysis.
- Hands-on engineering experience developing User Interface software.
- Excellent teamwork skills with proven ability to collaborate across multiple teams.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
- High attention to detail.
- Strong people management abilities with ability to ensure team success.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships across organizations.
- Experience with revision control systems (e.g. SVN and Git).
- Experience with issue tracking software (e.g, JIRA)
Required Education and Training- Bachelor/Master/PhD degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering or equivalent work experience.
- 10+ years industry experience developing and supporting embedded systems.
- 3+ years industry experience managing a team of User Interface software engineers.
Preferred Skills and Experience- Experience with designing software products in an FDA or other regulated industry or for mission critical applications.
- Experience with UI design.
- Experience with QNX, QML, and Qt.
- Experience with UML State machines.
- Experience with Matlab, Python, or other scripting languages.
- Experience with build systems such as GNU Make and CMake, EMake.
