Job Description

The Nuclear Science & Technology Directorate at Idaho National Laboratory is looking for a Department Manager to lead our Measurements Science department.

What You Will Do:

Lead cutting-edge research and technology development
  • Manage the Measurement Science Department, within the Nuclear Fuels and Materials Division, which is responsible for developing and assembling instrumentation included in nuclear fuels and materials experiments in irradiation facilities around the nation, but with a focus on those in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) and the Transient Reactor Test Facility (TREAT).
  • Oversee research and development activities aimed at integrating instrumentation and sensors technologies used in nuclear power plants, with a focus on advanced reactor concepts, working in close collaboration with other Organizations across all INL Directorates whose scope includes I&C research, development and operation.
  • Coordinate the Measurement Science Laboratory (MSL) Service Center, which comprises most laboratory spaces associated with the Department's research activities.


Build strategic partnerships
  • Build relationships with sponsors and partners-including DOE Nuclear Energy's Advanced Sensor and Instrumentation (ASI) program, other DOE-NE programs, the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Office of Science, and other domestic and international partners through Cooperative Research and Development Agreements and Strategic Partnerships Projects-that lead to new technical thrusts and programs of national relevance.
  • Collaborate with leaders across the laboratory complex to use the full resources of the DOE, as well as industry and university partners, to accelerate innovation in nuclear instrumentation.


Lead and grow your team
  • Provide guidance, direction, and leadership to your team, ensuring successful accomplishment of directorate goals and objectives in compliance with INL work controls and customer quality requirements.
  • Build a culture of collaboration, and innovation, , with a persistent focus toward the professional development of staff.
  • Own the department's human capital strategy including recruiting, retaining, developing staff, interns, post-docs, and others to maintain a strong talent pipeline.
  • Conduct performance appraisals, salary reviews, promotion reviews, and other administrative tasks.


Manage operations
  • Ensure allocated department overhead funds are tracked and appropriately administered; coordinate with other departments within the Nuclear Fuels and Materials Division, other directorates at the Laboratory, and user facilities to integrate work across programs; and work with user facilities and programs to improve execution and process efficiency.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Manager will report to the Division Director of Nuclear Fuels and Materials.

Required:
  • Advanced degree in Nuclear, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field, with at least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Leadership and management experience demonstrating effective skills in recruiting and developing research staff; conceiving, organizing, and leading instrumentation-related research projects and programs; developing and implementing business plans; and proposal formulation and program development.
  • Knowledge of nuclear systems, particularly reactor core components, and mechanical design for integration of instruments in irradiation experiments. Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • The position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE "L" clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.


Preferred:
  • PhD with 5 years of experience.
  • Experience in research, development, and qualification of sensors and/or instrumentation for in-core applications.
  • Business management experience.


Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with people is required. Job Information:
  • This role has a 9x80 work schedule with every other Friday off. The work location is in the Engineering and Research Office Building in Idaho Falls, ID.
  • The target pay range for this position is $158,712 - $237,174 annually. The full pay range is $107,844 - $274,980. At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
