JOB TITLE: Sr Maintenance Planner Substation

REQUISITION: TRA00ZK

DEPARTMENT: Substation Planning & Scheduling - Southland Service Center

LOCATION: Stilwell, KS

PAY RANGE: $84,500 - $112,600 (Min-Mid)

Scheduled Work Hours: Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (Additional hours as required).

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Under general direction of the Manager, Substation Planning & Scheduling, this position provides job schedules that coordinate support for maintenance performed on substations to maximize efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity. Specific duties include:

  • Work with Regional Planner and Supervisor to communicate the expectation for safe and efficient execution of precision maintenance activities through complete work packages, including:
    • Detailed work instructions and procedures
    • Supporting documents (equipment specifications, bills of material and drawings)
    • Resource estimates (labor, materials, equipment, tools, and outside services)
  • Develop and manage integrated maintenance schedules weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual by aligning substation maintenance, capital projects, compliance requirements, outage windows, resource availability, and operational priorities. Coordinate with system operations to schedule switching and clearances, track NERC compliance activities, plan and sequence capital work, forecast future workload, and organize corrective maintenance efforts.
  • Coordinate planned outages through the FLEX/FLUX outage management system. Work closely with System Operations, Transmission Operations, Regional Supervisors, Engineering, and Project Management personnel to obtain clearances, optimize outage opportunities, and maintain system reliability.
  • Achieves higher equipment availability and improves maintenance effectiveness through pre-job coordination activities, such as on-site walkdowns, organizing tasks in a logical manner, interfacing with internal and external customers, requesting the appropriate clearances, arranging for material and equipment staging, and communicating scheduled activities to craft and maintenance management employees.
  • Monitor and prioritize maintenance backlog to ensure timely execution of preventive, predictive, corrective, compliance, and reliability-related work activities based on risk, equipment criticality, and resource availability.
  • Actively engages in ongoing reliability, availability, and maintainability improvement efforts, including Preventative Maintenance Optimization (PMO), Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM), and Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
  • Develops and continuously improves personal and departmental planning and scheduling work processes by incorporating maintenance and reliability best practices and feedback from field personnel.


Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires a high school diploma and relevant experience. Prefer technical degree, bachelor's degree or other related degree that will enhance the candidate's knowledge, skill, and ability to successfully perform this job.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Required:

  • Expert level knowledge of safe work practices regarding the repair and maintenance of substation equipment such as transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, fuses, capacitors, distribution bus, voltage regulators, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and apply information from equipment files, drawings, catalogs, reports, and manuals; as well as performing the basic mathematical computations involved in planning, scheduling, estimating, and purchasing.
  • High level of proficiency using Maximo, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel applications; along with strong technical writing skills and keyboarding competency.
  • Self-starter with excellent organizational and time/priority management skills - work with little supervision.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities in a highly demanding team atmosphere - keep multiple jobs in controlled motion simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills - the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other personnel including peers, managers, customers, contractors, and other contacts.


Licenses, Certifications, Bonding and/or Testing Required:

Successful candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Working Conditions:

Most of the time will be spent in an office environment, with some time being spent in maintenance shops or at substations. Must have satisfactory work record including good attendance.
